Loreto Dorado Tournament

defrag4 - 9-20-2020 at 08:06 AM

Yesterday the local govt hosted the first fishing tournament of the season here, "New Normality"

It was a dorado shootout for biggest weight, I heard over 45 teams entered

While getting registered was simple enough ahead of time, It was a bit of a chitshow down at the marina with govt officials running around trying to check both everyone safety gear and take temperatures, check boat size to ensure healthy distancing etc etc,

I heard on the radio that 1/2 the teams didnt get the proper sanitization checks before they left the marina and would have to return or be disqualified :o

We launched around 6AM, no bait to be found from the bait guys so we ran out in between the islands and started jigging some sabikis, hooked up with some large sardines but they were either foul hooked or died instantly when hitting the live well, picked up a few small jacks which were a good bait size and a few mackeral as well, all except the jacks ended up dying pretty quick, with these high water temps weve been struggling to keep live baits in the tank

I had a plan to head up north towards Isla Delfenso and fish the reefs on the way back towards town as I had heard recent reports of some bigger fish in the area, my local friend heard they were way outside east of Punta Lobo, his report trumped mine so we headed out that way, about 15 miles outside of Punta Lobo we dropped the lines and started our troll.

No signs of life, no grass, no birds, no bait. No Good :-/

Saw a few other boats in the area, saw 1 hookup with a small dolphin

We continued trolling the area for a few hours with no success, started to run back inside a back and trolled a few other spots.

I saw a few small dorado jumping back near our spread but no bites

We ended up on a frenzied school of bonita which we had some fun throwing surface lures at, until the sharks showed up and shut down our party!

Eventually headed back into the marina with our tails tucked under. Not a single dorado for the day :(

Asking around the marina everyone had a similar story, the bite was off everywhere.

I saw the results this morning, out of 45 boats, the biggest dorado landed was only 15 pounds

2nd place was ~8 pounds

Congrats to Rubio sportsfishing for taking home both 1st and second place!

oh well, not my greatest day of fishing, we still had fun and it was a beautiful day on the water, well win it next time!

Nice report.

I’m glad you saved some of the bigger ones for me.

Great report. Hope the winner wasn`t disqualified.
One thing about fishing a tourny, you tune up all your gear. And that`s a good thing.
Good luck next year!

Great to see them have the tournament.

Dorado tourney in September?

Don't beat yourself up bout that. September is not exactly the best fishing month in Loreto.

You need to follow the wahoo whisperer over the hill, go west young man. Just saying.

Those are some nice Dodos.
That is a lot of fish tacos.
Also, great matching neck gaiters!
Neck gaiters prevents facial overexposure to the sun and wind,
as well as protection from a virus on a boat
about 25 miles out at sea lol
