Baja 1000 Bike Speed

TMW - 12-3-2020 at 02:35 PM

I just got around to reading last weeks Cycle News and was surprised at how low the bike speed was.

Mark Samuels, Justin Morgan, and Justin Jones averaged 43.11 mph. These guys are not slow pokes either. It must have been one heck of a course. I can't remember a 1000 with a speed that low. I can only relate back to 1987.

Second place was the Santiago Creel team averaging 39.20 mph. They had some bike problems that slowed them.

a quarter of the way into the race they had no competition.....how fast do you have to go?

You could be right no use running too fast and break the bike. Normally a loop race the bike speed is high 40s to 50. A race to La Paz low to mid 50s on a 450 bike. When they were running the big bikes like a XR650 and KX500 speed to La Paz was near 60mph. In 92 and 95 the OA bike and truck broke 60.

I did notice that the first Trophy Truck was just under 47mph so it must have been a rough or technical course.

TMW, I think you nailed it with what the game plan is for each race and group of ridders. Some guys can ride like hell but just kill the bikes between handing it off to the next guy.
I'm not fast but just about the time I start thinking I can ride some young guys blows by me at 20+ MPH faster than me and I was just thinking how I was really hanging it out! LOL...
