news outlets such as Dateline, 20 20, etc. need to be aware of this and do a show right now before the vacation season is here-This will kick Mexico City in the ass and heads will roll in with the authorities in PV. It always happens especially when tourist dollars come into play.

Someone from Anns family or friends who are helping with her recovery need to contact these news outlets as well and what would be better than to have both missing persons highlighted on a such a program?

If anyone knows who may be helping with Anns disappearance to contact me and just maybe we can get some qualified people to get some answers.

This is a good idea.

white whale - 5-31-2021 at 12:19 PM

I saw the reply counter change but without any good news. Too bad.

I like those true crime drama shows like the next person but I doubt they will sign on without a hook for interest, sad as it is TV requires more excitement to get involved. Plus they usually come in with the crime solved and get the court proceedings for the final scene.

I'll re-state from earlier post since I re-watched the movie other day, Three Billboards. You need to rattle the town with embarrassment so that people who know something can come forward so this lady can be put to rest properly. A big ugly billboard, not with pleading for help but shame that this crime will go unpunished. That is a hook TV loves.
The expat community needs to assist and sign on as one voice.

cactuspete1970 - 6-1-2021 at 11:19 AM

Curious, aren't some of the local expats bajanomad members?

lizard lips - 6-1-2021 at 11:36 AM

Thank you for all of your ideas and input.

Setting up a reward fund will not work in either of these cases. From experience they will go nowhere so please don't waste your time.

White Whale-Your right about tv programs showing exactly how the investigations proceeded in the eventual arrest and convictions of those responsible however I have also seen many related news programs informing those of what has occurred and the lack of those handling investigations have dropped the ball as with both of these.

Something soon will happen and I truly believe answers will come.

It has been almost 6 months with nothing new to report.

David K - 7-11-2021 at 07:16 PM

Another month since (Two for Baja) Connie's post and no new news, I have heard of.

dboyd3852 - 9-27-2021 at 07:33 AM

This is still one of saddest things that has ever happened to me. I am sick that no one has come forward to help to find her. Or find out what happened. I wonder if the tourism that BOLA relies on has dried up. And I can't believe ex-pats are still living there. Unless the town is so afraid to do anything. VERY VERY DISTURBING. I have reached out to everyone of my representatives and the VP & President of the USA. No one answered me except for Senator Feinstein and that was only a form. No one up here seems to care about my sweet friend who wouldn't hurt a fly.

Hard to believe that still nothing has turned up! Has BOLA changed that much or area people coming from other area to commit crimes?

Not hard to believe at all. Statement reads naive. Know Baja?

advrider - 10-1-2021 at 06:12 PM

OK, so please do fill me in with your wealth of knowledge! Sorry it was an honest question, I know meth has hit many towns but I haven't seen a lot of signs in BOLA. Maybe I don't spend enough time there so I've missed it? I'm very naive about Baja, I know the single track well. I also know many more people here and school me on that as well.

I know I wouldn't spend to much time in Catavina at a late hour out and about. That I gather from my limited training in dealing with thief's, drug dealers, murders, rapist, molesters and felons. Thanks for your input. Feel free to send me a message as well if you don't want to share with everyone.

Regardless of how this post goes, thank you for your service, much respect!

We’ve only been to LA Bay a few times over the years! Primarily because everytime we visit the Wife and I both get “bad vibes” unlike most other places we go in Baja! I’m not able to state why this is so either!

Many of us get the same vibe at Tortuga as well.

BajaTed - 10-4-2021 at 06:39 AM

Bahia Tortugas is one of the stops for the Ba-ha-ha sailing event every year in early November. The softball games that the town hosts for the event participants is a real good time in a beautiful place.

I've picked up on a less than welcoming vibe in BoLA as well. The proprietor at Los Vientos has been friendly but most everybody else I've run across there seems indifferent. I chalked it up previously to the fact that by the time we reach BoLA, my crew and their rigs are plenty dusty and don't look like much.

I think I may understand the bad vibe thing... my wife is not fond of the place, but mostly because she thinks of it as a fishing place (she is not a big fish eater). I think of it as a history place.

I have found the people I interact with very friendly, however... the late China ('chee-nah') of the taco stand, the Diaz family (Chubasco at Casa Diaz and Sammy at the tire shop), Bety at Campo Archelon, and of course Doc at Camp Gecko... all very kind and hospitable.

I think the only negative experience was with Victoria at Costa del Sol over the 'scallop' (squid) dinner I got... She makes great soup, however! It still is the hotel I first recommend to those needing one (original rooms, not new addition).
calamari

David K - 11-12-2021 at 08:20 AM

Hi Steve, yes I think 'calamari' is Italian for squid, too?
How are you?
Been many years since those great Camp Gecko days!

Maybe you both missed my humor or dinner problem I had?
Scallops were on the menu, I even asked Victoria if they were fresh scallops.
My plate arrived with calamari on it. Victoria insisted they were scallops... but knew they weren't as much as I did. Her soup was delicious as always... I left and went to China's for fish tacos!

i suspect that they served you callo de hacha which is translated as scallop. it does not look like traditional scallop that gringos know, and it sort of looks like squid meat (and may be as chewy as squid; callo de hacha is not as tender as typical scallop meat you are familiar with).

well, scallop and squid are all molluscs -- so similar overall biology

scallop is the typical translation for callo de hacha. callo de hacha is a pen clam, not a true scallop.

Way back I did hear of restaurants using chunks of Stingray wings punched out in circles and served as scallops .

There was a study done that showed that a big amount of fish served in restaurants was NOT what on the menu. Especially Red Snapper

locals call callo de hacha "scallop." when callo de hacha is breaded and sauted, it is easily mistaken for squid, which is just what DK did.

pauldavidmena - 11-12-2021 at 03:58 PM

One of my favorite Cantonese dishes is Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. Where I grew up (Farmingdale, NY - a Long Island suburb of NYC), there wasn't a hint of lobster to be found. The "lobster" meat was ground pork. I don't know what the sauce was, but over white rice - with plenty of hot mustard - it was quite the treat.

I'd feel very differently about squid or calamari being passed off as scallops, since I like the latter but don't care for either of the former.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the original post, but sadly there have been no new developments on that front.

No you Buffon…

Did you mean to call me Buffon or buffoon? Is either an insult? For a self-appointed spelling policeman, you really should run spell check before you post!

Back on track I hope, any news on Maryann? I didn't look back but wasn't her burnt truck the last news?

David K - 11-15-2021 at 07:42 PM

There has been no news.
Her burned-out truck was under a Hwy 1 bridge near El Crucero. Nothing else reported.
Her two sons have added nothing on Facebook or any emails to me since the last one for public viewing, reported here.
We all want and need closure.

dboyd3852 - 11-20-2021 at 02:15 PM

Anybody anywhere protesting at all about her disappearance? I have written ALL of my legislative representatives both in California and nationally with little or no response. I also warn anyone going to Mexico not to go because of what happened to MaryAnn. She does not deserve to be forgotten and/or ignored. I wish for closure too but I'm not sure her family or friends will ever get it. VERY disappointed in both Mexican and American authorities.

The most likely way they ever find her remains in our lifetime is if they apprehend the killers and they confess where they dumped her remains (plea bargain).

KHumfreville - 2-22-2022 at 03:52 PM

Skipjack Joe is most likely correct, and it's extremely unfortunate for my mom and our family and friends.

It seems as if though many, many residents in Bahia know not only about what happened, but who is responsible. I have had several local residents of Bahia contact me directly to tell me that 2 men were seen in her truck in Nuevo Rosarito a day or two after she went missing, with the truck partially spray painted black. Those two men were identified as Carlos Estrada (https://www.facebook.com/carlos.estrada.5243) and Gabriel Vale Arce (https://www.facebook.com/Karkajez/).

I have had many additional locals contact me directly to tell me that Gabriel Vale Arce is responsible for what has happened to my mom.

I have had several other locals contact me to let me know about a few other individuals also connected with this, including some names from the more prominent historical families within Bahia.

We believe that local people want to rid themselves of guilt, and they think that by telling her family what they know, they will do this, however it does nothing because the federal investigators need them to speak with them and testify with their information (anonymously or not) in order for it to make a difference. The people who know will simply not speak to anyone who it could make a difference with because they are afraid of corruptness, even on the federal level, and they are afraid of retaliation if it were to become known that they spoke out.

This and much more detailed information has been reported to the federal investigators in both Mexico and the U.S.

It seems that everyone knows, and no-one will speak up. By doing so, they show the criminals that this type of thing can continue to happen without consequence.

Question

John M - 2-22-2022 at 05:20 PM

Are Estrada and Arce residents of Bahia de Los Angeles as far as you know? If so, then I'd think the risk for residents as well as for tourists remains higher.

My heart breaks every time I think of your mom. Tragic events.

Kindest regards

John M

KHumfreville - 2-22-2022 at 05:27 PM

They are both residents. Estrada was (is?) married to Osiris Diaz who works at the local delegate office. He is known as one who is involved in the illegal net fishing that goes on.

Arce is a friend of them, though they both deny it if asked. He is said to be the son of a local head of drug activity.

The risk is not worth the reward.

mtgoat666 - 2-22-2022 at 06:11 PM

Sorry for your loss. I know how frustrating it is to know who the perps are, but be prevented from seeing justice.

A concerted letter-writing campaign by many Americans and Mexicans may light a fire under uncaring Mexican government officials that find it too easy to skate thru their jobs ignoring their duties.

In another thread today, it was said the local muni is going to start putting better cops in BOLA…. I hope the cops do something to clean up the criminals that are unchecked in BOLA…

KHumfreville - 2-22-2022 at 06:15 PM

So far mass letter writing has gone uncared for.

I have heard the same recently about the local police situation. It's a good step that I hope makes a difference for everyone.

David K - 2-22-2022 at 10:30 PM

Thanks for joining Baja Nomad, Kevin.
There are many here who knew or admired your parents.

BajaBlanca - 2-23-2022 at 02:46 AM

I too express my condolences for your loss.

bajaric - 2-23-2022 at 11:17 AM

Last August I looked at the bridge where the truck was found, Puente las Viboras. (sp?) The bridge is in the middle of nowhere on Hwy 1 about 30 Km north of the BOLA junction. There was evidence of a vehicle fire under the bridge. I took pictures but do not want to post them on here. If they might be of any use let me know and I can email them.

It is not possible to see under the bridge from the highway, you have to walk down a short dirt road to view the hidden area under the bridge. Condolences and hopes that someday justice will be served.

BajaTed - 2-23-2022 at 01:14 PM

The perps have local family and they need to loose their jobs and get the fear of God put in them, someone, somehow needs to put the squeeze on them and make them fearful.

The new Cops should squeeze the Perps to keep the Status Quo, the community needs to say that is not enough, The moment won't last, someone needs to act out

Sounds to me like FEAR in the population IS the status quo. No locals, whether the authorities or residents, are going to get involved. Same ol' rural Mexico, different communidad.

It's going to take an outside agency, with bigger firepower than the local gang, to fix this. Is there a Guarda Nacional presence in BOLA? I am thinking not.

They are everywhere over here, now, after yet another municipal police commander was murdered and there was a high profile attempt on the new mayor's life, in her first two weeks in office.

Sadly, and ironically, an innocent bystander who was part of a protest against femicide in Mexico at city hall, was killed. An 18 year old female. The attack went down in broad daylight, right in front of city hall, with a military presence nearby. One perp was also killed. The others got away.

Military checkpoints and patrols are a way of life over here, now.

Skipjack Joe - 2-24-2022 at 08:39 PM

That must be frustrating. To know who the murderer is and not be able to do anything about it. It's almost insulting. To face the murderer on the street while he smiles at you knowing that you're incapable of doing anything to him. That's too hard to even imagine.

Another way is that there are people who are capable of helping justice along.

If it was my mom or dad I'd have a very hard time not dealing with it directly.

advrider - 2-28-2022 at 08:14 PM

I would have to agree with JZ, I would think it would be a cheap business deal? Are these guys in with the cartel or just big thugs in a small town?

KHumfreville - 5-31-2022 at 12:15 PM

Me too... It's been extremely hard. It's very hard to keep the thoughts of all the possibilities or both what could have happened and what could happen moving forward at bay.

There are several different versions regarding their status. The Federales are sure they are not cartel related, just a small band of local thugs. Others express concerns about cartel because they were (do?) move drugs around, which is supposedly why they wanted her truck. Several of them are local fishermen, I believe involved in the illegal net fishing (or so I've heard).

I really enjoyed the book that they wrote, what amazing time your family had in Baja.
