So what's the deal?

Is the border open or what? I've been hearing for months that the Canadian and Mexican borders are both closed, but it sounds like the Mexican one is actually open. I'm planning on making a trip to Cabo in January and crossing at Sonoyta. Anything I need to know about? Is Mexico basically business as usual?

January is over 7 months away. Nobody knows what may happen with covid restrictions in next 7 months, but we can hope for improvement, eh?

Check back in November and December for update on covid travel restrictions!

I think I'm going to drive over to Chihuahua while I'm on this trip too.

I've driven down through Sonora 50 times. Not sure I'd have the balls to go tooling around Chihuahua.

Btw, you will need an import permit for your vehicle for that.

I just returned from Baja, crossing at Mexicali both directions.

No one asked the purpose of my trip until the U.S. CBP agent at the border on my northbound trip home. None of the Mexican authorities were the least bit interested, whether at the border or at the military checkpoints. It was business as usual but with face masks.

I'm very familiar with the TIP and the boundaries (basically everything east of 15 until you hit Guaymas). There's a Banjercito at the Pitoquito garita I can pick one up at I believe. I drove to Mazatlan from Ojinaga, Chihuahua just a few years ago and then drove over to Monterrey and up to Laredo.

My plan is to take 2 to Janos, then 10 to 45, 45 to Chihuahua, and then 16 to Ojinaga. I'm wanting to stop at Paquime (Nvo Casas Grandes) and the Peguis Canyon (Ojinaga / I've been here before). I'm not too overly concerned with safety since I'll only be driving while the sun is out. I've heard MEX-2 has issues sometimes between AP and the road up to Antelope Wells, but I'll just so some research to make sure there isn't anything active going on before I drive it.

Land border is supposed to be closed for non-essenital, as per 3-lateral agreement.
Canada and US do their part, Mexico don't, so you won't have problems crossing in.
Currently in Mexico 6% received 1 shot, this is 1 person out of 15, almost nothing. Fewer people yet got 2 shots.

A little late from my January plans. Alas I plan on going in May.

Anything new I need to know? Are US citizens still exempt from vax mandates and negative tests if crossing by land (both ways)? Are masks still a thing in all of Baja / certain parts of Baja?

Hwy 16? I've done it lots on the motorbikes. Chihuahua state is awesome.
So is Durango. One just needs to have the situational awareness tuned.
It's the REAL Mexico. Baja has more in common with alta California than Mexico.

You ever gone the "back way" east from Alamos? I´ve heard there's a route from there to Creel and it's always intrigued me but I was told by some Alamos locals that it's narco territory.



I did Creel to Alamos via Batopilas,Urique,Bahuichivo and Chinipas last April. 3 weeks in the barrancas. It was mostly offroad 2 track.

It's definitely narcolandia. They'll let you know where you can go. We only got denied one route we wanted to do. They were mostly friendly.

We did that route several times. Yup definitely narco country.
We had zero problems. It's fairly obvious that we were there to ride...not for any other reason. I would not go in September/October....that seems to be their busy season. We arrived in. Creel a day after a big down town shootout. [14 dead]
About 10 years ago. There was brass still all over the ground.
But normally most towns feel quite secure. It is a rapidly changing area
With new roads being developed by mining interests. They can't wait to displace the indigenous population and get the mineral wealth.

The only part of Chihuahua I've been to is the area around Ojinaga; and south to Jimenez and the Durango border. I've also traveled between Torreon and Mazatlan. Durango so far is my favorite state in Mexico of the six I have been to.

As for the masks and ongoing restrictions (if any), I'm looking for info not flame wars. I'm sure I'll figure it out once I get there, but I'm just looking for info. I haven't been to Mexico since 2017 and I've never been to the Peninsula or Sonora.

Like here's some good questions. What type of mask qualifies as a mask in Mexico? Are gaiters allowed in most places that require them? Do you have to wear a mask at checkpoints? What about outside at gas stations? Are US citizens still exempt from testing to come back into US at land borders?

Lots of Mexicans are wearing gators. Especially the fishing guys. No requirement to test when driving across, only when flying.

Most places want you to wear it inside. Outside too, which is ridiculous, but much more lax outside.

This will hopefully be relaxed soon as conditions improve.

Gators are fine. Out of courtesy I wear a mask at checkpoints and gas stations if they are wearing theirs. No test required crossing by land.
