US offically imposes embargo on export of Mexican wild ocean-caught shrimp

Due to problems with lack of turtle excluder devices on nets.
Farm-raised shrimp OK to export.

Have never seen shrimp farms on the Baja; only on the mainland.

There is a large aquaculture project north of San Juan de La Costa. I think they are farming shrimp, but do not have first hand knowledge of what is in those ponds.

Actually there is a shrimp farm in La Paz out near Pichillingue right where the Libramiento ties into the shoreline road. On the bay side of the road is a hatchery for amberjack with their growout pens at Isla Gaviota. The shrimp farm is across the road from the hatchery. I believe the pens over at San Juan de La Costa are totuava.

Strange timing. Most everyone I know has never seen so many turtles, as in the last five years. Their nesting areas have become much more protected than ever before, over here. Nests are literally fenced off, when discovered, so ATVs and foot traffic cant damage them. We have an organization comprised of Mexicans and gringos who monitor the beaches during nesting season.

Then there's the timing of it being at the ABSOLUTE END OF SHRIMP TRAWLER SEASON. Political points without any real effect, right now.
