Erle Stanley Gardner Photos: Some Never Before Seen!

David K - 5-6-2021 at 04:01 PM

With many thanks to the Temecula Valley Museum and historian Steve Williamson, I have been allowed to share the hundreds of photos from the camera of author, explorer, and Perry Mason creator, Erle Stanley Gardner.
http://www.temeculavalleymuseum.org/#

Steve put together a file of what he thought looked like mission subject matter for me. I also have more subjects: planes, runways, and copters and travel and camping.

The photos have been digitally enhanced and preserved. I will add a location if I know where.
The photos are all from the 1960s
I will post a few at a time...

Mission Santo Domingo

El Rosario de Abajo (note mission bells next to newer church)

San Ignacio

? Comondú or Santiago were my initial guesses. The bell at Comondú today is not the same.

El Mármol

JW Black examines a rockface that looks manmade. [I have seen it, south of San Rafael]

Wonderful documentation of the history of these places, though it wasn't that long ago.

Incredible photos! Can I post on my facebook? Who do I give credit to?

David K - 5-6-2021 at 05:05 PM

I am posting them on my Facebook page... The file size is so huge, I need to copy off of my Postimages album and even some of the photos are too big for Postimages to upload them for Internet posting! 25 MiB is the max for Postimages and some are near 100 MiB tif images.

Blanca, share them from my Facebook page... I just posted them on your page.

Nice! Thanks for sharing.

I've also stopped and photographed that natural stone "wall".

Location of the planes??

larryC - 5-6-2021 at 10:10 PM

The rock paintings are up in Sierra San Francisco, I think that is cueva flecha but the last time I was there was 1985 so my memory might have faded. The planes are parked in BoLA at the Diaz compound. I would guess circa mid 60's.

Truly incredible and invaluable photos, David. Thankyou so much for posting. Brings back so many great memories of my visits in the '50's and 60's, especially of San Ignacio, San Borja, and Papa Diez's place in Bahia de las Angeles.

1969:
Back then a low pass over the runway to check for cows was S.O.P.

Sometimes a hump in the runway put you in the air again.

Hanging onto the plane for dear life when a Chubasco came along was more than memorable.

Seeing Mom pee in a Styrofoam ice chest over Baja is now a family legend

Ted, fun story... is that a particular landing strip, or all Baja strips in general?

So wonderful! Thanks.

More... flying was the fast way around Baja, in the 1960s!

I have about 20 more locations in Baja with that geological feature. Some close to Widowmaker.

Tioloco - 5-11-2021 at 11:45 AM

Great pictures!

Anyone want to guess at locations? I know a few:

True :) Google tells me #9 is the cathedral in Mexico City.

geoffff - 5-11-2021 at 08:24 PM

Is this BoLA? If I go to the airstrip in Google Earth, that sloped island on the right looks like it could be Isla Cabeza de Caballo, with Isla Angel de la Guarda in the far background.

David K - 5-11-2021 at 09:32 PM

That is correct, Geoff!

#3 is also L.A. Bay.

#6 & #10 are both aerial views of San Ignacio.
#2 & #7 appear to be San Francisco de la Sierra.
#3 is L.A. Bay.
#8 & #9 both may be in the mainland (#9 for sure per geoffff).

I am most curious about #4 and #5...
They both have boojum trees so we know they are between El Rosario and San Ignacio.
#4 may be from a copper mine near El Rosario? A lot has changed from the 1960 to today, as far as remains of a ruin go.
#5 looks like a road switchback under construction or a mine, perhaps???
