ROSARITO, BAJA CALIFORNIA — U.S. border authorities arrested the founder of a Santa Barbara surfing school on suspicion of killing his two young children in Mexico, the Baja California State Attorney General announced Tuesday.

Border agents arrested 40-year-old Matthew Taylor, a U.S. citizen, as he tried to cross from Tijuana into the U.S. at the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday, according to Baja California officials.

Baja California prosecutor Hiram Sánchez Zamora said Taylor traveled to Rosarito, which is about a 30-minute drive south of Tijuana, and checked into a City Express hotel on Saturday with his 1-year-old son and his 3-year-old daughter.

Sánchez said investigators found Taylor left the hotel on Monday morning at 2:54 a.m. with both children. A few hours later, Taylor returned to the City Express at 6:33 a.m., but without his children, according to Sánchez, who gave details at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

At 7:27 a.m., Baja California police received a 911 call about the shocking discovery of the bodies of two babies in diapers who had been repeatedly stabbed with a wooden stake. Their remains were discovered by a farmworker near the El Descanso ranch, which is located at kilometer marker 55.4 on the scenic road between Tijuana and Ensenada.

Sánchez said the girl had been stabbed approximately 12 times in the area around her thorax, and the boy had 17 stab wounds in a similar area.

Sánchez said agents with Baja California’s State Security and Investigation Guard alerted U.S. authorities that Taylor would likely be trying to make his way to the border and back to the United States. U.S. border officers stopped him as he approached the San Ysidro Port of Entry and arrested him, he added.

Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for further information about the arrest.

The FBI said it is working with the Santa Barbara police following a report of three missing people believed to have crossed into Mexico.

“A joint investigation is underway among the Santa Barbara Police Department, the FBI in Los Angeles and San Diego, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Mexican authorities,” an FBI spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday. “Currently the adult male is in federal custody and the investigation is continuing.”

State investigators in Mexico said Taylor runs the Lovewater Surf Co., a surfing school based in Santa Barbara, where he was born. According to the surfing school’s website, Taylor earned a master’s degree in Spanish from the University of California Santa Barbara. He completed his undergrad studies at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where he was on the surf team.

Mexican and U.S. authorities are working together to return the bodies of the children to California

I've spent 26 years with people like this! Kill their kid or roommate and go have breakfast without a worry! No shortage of sick people in the world. He will be out of jail in ten years, just follow along! So sad..

Howard - 8-10-2021 at 08:47 PM

Very tragic but it good to know that the authorities on both sides of the border are working together.

Bajazly - 8-10-2021 at 08:50 PM

Well, once he is in jail he won't have a very good time and may never come out alive. People who ef with kids don't do well in prison... that is if he did it and is convicted.

WTF

BajaTed - 8-11-2021 at 06:53 AM

Children being used as a weapon in a failed relationship.

No hate for the killer or sadness for the children's lost lives, but vitriol for the potential outcome of his punishment.

Take your surfboard and just paddle away somewhere else dude

SFandH - 8-11-2021 at 07:02 AM

And the poor mother, oh my goodness, her life is forever deeply, deeply saddened. I wish her strength.

What a tragedy. Horrible.

LancairDriver - 8-11-2021 at 07:49 AM

What a sad tragedy and a waste of innocent lives.

And also sad for yet another excuse for the same pathetic chronic haters to fit their vitriol for their usual subjects into the thread.

mtgoat666 - 8-11-2021 at 04:12 PM

according to latest info, murder had a QANON (trumpster) connection:

According to a document filed in United States District Court, Coleman admitted to killing both children by shooting a "spear fishing gun" into their chests. He discarded the weapon and his bloody clothes off the side of the road in Tijuana and then began his return to the United States, according to the court filing.

Coleman allegedly told federal investigators that he believed his children were "growing into monsters" and he needed to kill them. He told investigators he was "enlightened" by QAnon and Illuminati conspiracy theories and he was receiving visions and signs. He told investigators he believed his wife was possessed with "serpent DNA" which she had passed onto their children.

He said he knew what he was doing was wrong, but told investigators he was saving the world, according to the court documents.

SFandH - 8-11-2021 at 05:08 PM

"According to officials, Coleman’s wife filed a report of the missing person the next day and used a computer application to confirm that Coleman’s phone was in Rosarito on Sunday afternoon.

The same phone search service was used on Monday, indicating that Coleman’s mobile device is near the port of entry to San Isidro on the US-Mexico border, prosecutors said.

The FBI dispatched a San Diego colleague to contact Coleman. Coleman re-entered the United States in a sprinter van without children.

“When the children weren’t found, FBI agents contacted Rosarito law enforcement officers and learned that morning Mexican authorities had recovered the bodies of the two children, consistent with Coleman’s children’s description. “The statement said.

FBI agents later detained Coleman. He will appear in the first court in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon."

You are just such an evil b#tch. You take every chance you get to make a tragedy a Racist or Political play. Terrible human being.

What do you have to say about the Race and Party that is responsible for thousands of murders in the inner cities of America this year.

Just drop your Racist and Political shtick for this one story.

Shorty,
I am just repeating the news. Not my fault if you are upset that murderer was one of your team members.

Wait a minute. What's this mean? What ''Race and Party do you think is responsible for thousands of murders''?

Why don't YOU drop the ''Racist and Political shtick'' for awhile.

Every comment has a political message in it. Are you Qanon?

Insight into this man's insanity.

pappy - 8-12-2021 at 07:11 AM

Apparently there are no references or posts about q anon, etc on any of his social accounts. Some feel could be a ploy for an insanity plea. On another forum the term bipolar comes up a lot...
Used a spear gun to start out with then multiple stabbing.

Frickin brutal , horrid.

RFClark - 8-12-2021 at 07:50 AM

Posting information about a very large number of dead and injured children murdered by parents and others who are not supporters of the former President is very simple. Their pictures and stories are on the internet daily.

That said it would be equally unjust to claim that the millions of Americans who voted for the current President are personally responsible!

The real problem is people looking for justifications to hate their neighbors who don’t agree with their politics!

Howard - 8-12-2021 at 09:13 AM

Just for once can you keep this thread to the subject at hand, a tragedy that has left a family devastated.

Please take your unhappy lives to another thread.

RFClark - 8-12-2021 at 09:16 AM

That was my point!

Tioloco - 8-12-2021 at 09:23 AM

Very sad story. RIP

Social media and mental illness along with the results is a new norm for our environment.
What he says is total BS and is a manifestation of his disease to cause even more pain after the act. NO one in their right mind commits such an act.
Bringing up the excuse aspect is a trigger for a defense posture or an affirmation posture in social media scenarios like this; just like the wacko desired. It was meant to give the victims the clouds of confusion of why they are talking about what he said and not our grief. PTSD for the family forever. Time is all they have now.

Don Pisto - 8-12-2021 at 10:10 AM

this story couldn't be any more bizarre, im in SB now and everybody in the surf community knows this family and of course is in shock. you could always see his van parked at Padero lane, he was well liked

Some form of mental illness is to blame for sure, no one in their right mind would do such a thing. Could have been fueled by drug use, often used to quit the voices or just a mental health! It's something that the rest of us will never understand. Manson and many others really believed in the things they were doing.

Had a very close friend go "mentally ill" in his 40's. It was so weird, he just wasn't the same person anymore. Unless you've actually experienced something like that, it's really hard to comprehend. It still bothers me how it affected him, even his wife and adolescent children were helpless. Sadly, he died a few years later.

And, before the self righteous chime in, drugs and/or alcohol weren't factors, he used neither. It convinced me that mental illness is real.

"if he did it"???? Are you serious? Looks to be a no-brainer cut-and-dried case to me.
