How can we incentivize critical thinking and some basic history education in the general voting population of the USA? Maybe toss in some civics and clearly some economics?

Well John, they weren't reluctant to boost the taxes or turn in on the tap of the flows of energy, so the tax reductions should be an easily accepted next step don't you think?
I've never seen anyone yet complain about paying fewer taxes. Right now the government is obtaining zero taxes from EV's that aren't being bought or built. Any additional sales won't cost them anything but generate more jobs, reduced pollution and speed conversion.
Last time I saw a shortage of low cost housing effectively corrected, a similar plan was introduced, property taxes delayed by 2 years, and reduced taxation for the next years as long as they kept a certain percentage of low cost rentals. This created a massive increase in low cost housing by developers. The cost I suppose is the rental rates and real estate valuations remained depressed for decades. due to an excess of available rentals.

I think his comment was his secretary was paying a higher rate of taxes than he was required to and he found that unfair and illogical if we are thinking of the same statement.

Wow. Bouncing cheerleaders. Porn food for the sexual perverts out there.

speaking of cheerleaders,...

Cheerleading Against Climate Change

The Sea Squad uses cheerleading to discuss climate change, colonialism and capitalism – and acts as a model for action.

Cheerleaders are individuals, working together as a team. They are a rhizomatic network. They are a model of group leadership, making statements in formation. They are power in a union. A body of water is comprised of individual water molecules, each invisible. And yet the sea as a mass contains so much power.

I did no such thing. I have disdain and disrespect for the sexualization of women, and the sexist men who enjoy such things and deny they are being sexist. I have nothing against cheerleaders as people, it's the mixing in of sexuality in the "sport", if that's what you call cheerleading.

It would be interesting to see how many men would enjoy watching cheerleaders for their skill, if they didn't wear skimpy outfits and have boob jobs.

surabi - 11-28-2022 at 02:04 PM

Again, you are completely mischaracterizing my words and their meaning.

If you can't see the difference between a person dressing up to go out with a lover or friends, and wearing a tiny skirt like some 4 year old child, or showing major cleavage in front of thousands of people, then you have nothing of value to add to this topic.
And since when does a woman "dressing up" mean she has to have her boobs spilling out of her shirt, or wear a skirt that barely covers her private parts?

Going about unkempt, unwashed and wearing a potato sack is not the alternative to presenting oneself as a sex object. To suggest so is ludicrous.

I can assure you I am not a prude. In fact, I hung out at a lot of skinny dipping beaches when I lived in Canada, because it seems stupid to put on some skimpy piece of clothing to go swimming.
Wearing a bikini on the beach is appropriate- wearing one for a job interview at a bank is not. It's not some stretch to say that female cheerleaders' outfits are designed to be sexy, they obviously are. Just admit that you like that, instead of trying to pretend that isn't the case and you simply enjoy their "skill".

What do you think cheerleaders should wear? Something "not sexy?" But then it comes back to your narrow definition of "sexy" and "skimpy", doesn't it? Please define "skimpy" and "sexy" for us, can you?

See the problem with your argument? It only includes your opinion.

Why don't you stop and visit at my high school if you think cheerleaders dress too provocatively. They actually dress conservatively compared to most females on campus. Bring your pearls, as I guarantee you'll be clutching them like an old scold.

Maybe you can help out our administration with a revised dress code? We've struggled for many years to come up with one that is not clearly slanted toward control of female attire. Is that fair?

And, no, I do not watch football for the cheerleaders. Another figment of your imagination. Don't project your hang ups on the rest of us. You clearly harbor some ill will toward men based on your comments. Why is that?

Just another a$$hold troll. Man, you and JZ will always sound like first class jerks debating women. Had you pegged wrong, John.

Remind me. How many women have I debated so far on BN?

Either way, Lee, I'm sorry to read your comments. I feel both of you misunderstand my position. I think she crossed the line in a couple areas. Mainly from disengagement with today's youth.

If you read my comments, I'm actually supporting girls and their right to do (and be) what they want, not be judged by others. I teach high school girls and boys every day, I converse and am acquainted with many of them, allegedly I'm one of the most popular teachers. I don't judge them on dress, hair, or gender. They're our children, all of ours.

Fashion and dress is not scandalous any more, girls are not programmed to find a husband, have babies, and be housewives. I know many LGBTQ kids, it's normal now. They are just like you and me. It's okay.

Also, try and tell a mom in a mini skirt that her daughter is dressed inappropriately and see what happens. Fireworks.

My dear friend Suzy was a Charger cheerleader and is our amazing cheer coach. She's heard all this stereotype crap all her life. If I didn't speak up for the continual denigration of these young women, what kind of man or friend would I be.

So, that's me, take it or leave it. Some of you have not been around young people for years, I'm with them every day. I'm standing for them.

I enjoy my time with them. It makes me proud and encouraged about our future. They are much more civilized than my generation.

But. they all still love the music from my generation. So, we will always have that common thread. Except they never heard the music when it was new nor had a chance to see most of the bands they now love. Priceless rep for me with my kiddos!

Cliff and beach erosion is not sea level changing any more than are landslides in the mountains. Sand moves and cliffs fall.
Goat can look at a graph. The common sense people can look at historical photos or simply walk a pier and not get their feet wet or launch a boat at the same ramp their grandfather's used.
Can you tell a four inch sea level rise when high tide raises the sea 60 inches, twice a day?
Anyway, the 90 year old + palm is still just above the high tide, as it was in the 1930s.

RFClark - 11-28-2022 at 08:18 PM

Goat,

You can’t say anything about Geta’s qualifications to lead anything because of her disability, but it’s reasonable to wonder what they are? Perhaps it’s the fact that you can’t question anything she says that makes her attractive to lead a movement that wants no discussion of its ajenda.

Yes! The high tide is 4 inches higher! If the engineers of yesterday built the storm drain system to drain the streets at high tide 50 years ago, today those storm drains may no longer work effectively at high tide. This is why many coastal cities have more frequent flooding today compared to 50 years ago.

Again, you try to put words in my mouth. I never said or implied that you watch football for the cheerleaders. I implied that men would not be interested in watching cheerleaders if they weren't presented in a sexy manner. Which I stand by. What I originally said, that really seemed to push some male buttons here, was that football is boring and just seems to be an excuse to drink beer and ogle cheerleaders. I didn't ever say I thought that was a terrible thing, but interesting how defensive that made some men here.

I "clearly" harbor ill will toward men? Now you sound just like JZ. (Also aligned with JZ on trying psychoanalyze someone you really know nothing about) I could put you in touch with dozens of men who would set you straight on that.

And I can assure you I am not disengaged from today's youth. I raised 3 kids and my house was full of kids and teenagers for over 20 years. I have 5 grandkids between the ages of 12 and 21. My 18 year old granddaughter just spent a month with me and can't wait to come back.

BTW, it's real cute how you deleted your post that I responded to, where you equated not dressing in a sexually provocative manner with never dressing up and going about unkempt, and unwashed and wearing a potato sack.

Goat,

125 M - 150M in sea level rise in 12,000 - 14,000 years is about a CM/Year average. There have been very large variations from that average.

Your 1st chart shows about 250MM in 120 years or 2+MM per year. Your 2nd chart shows about 3+MM per year over a 25 year period. Both charts have a margin of error grater than the difference between them and both are well below the historic average of 10MM/year.

Clarkles,
You are not entirely stupid! You see the change: rate of sea level rise has recently increased. Slope is getting steeper. This is due to increased GHG emissions and resulting global warming.

RFClark - 11-29-2022 at 09:59 AM

Goat,

They probably are a part in addition to the normal warming cycle we’ve been in for a long time. Remember a few inches is a very small fraction of hundreds of feet in sea lever rise and 25 years is even less measured against 12 -14 thousand years. That being the case, uncontrolled and controlled burning are currently the largest part of added CO2 that we can influence. When Greta and her supporters start talking about controlling that please let me know. I don’t think they’ve said a word on the subject to date.

mtgoat666 - 1-8-2023 at 07:48 PM

California’s snowpack near decade high. What’s it mean for the drought?

As the new year begins, California’s Sierra is closing in on the second-largest snowpack we’ve seen at this time of year in the last two decades, with more snow expected to pummel the mountain range in the coming days.

On Saturday, the statewide average stood at a whopping 162% of normal compared to historic averages for this time of year, just eclipsing last year’s figure. But of the seven times in the last 20 years that California started the new year with an above-average snowpack, only twice — 2005 and 2011 — did it finish the snow season in April still above average.

“It’s just far too early to tell whether or not these storms will have an impact on the drought,” said Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Laboratory near Donner Summit. “We were in this exact same spot last year. We were way above average, and then the faucet shut off in January through March.”

Last year, the Sierra snowpack plummeted from 160% of normal at the end of 2021 to 37% of normal by the season’s end. The last time California closed a snow season above average was in 2019 — at 161% of normal — after ending the previous year at just 73% of normal.

It will never cease to boggle my mind how seemingly reasonable people can willingly ignore scientific fact. Overall, the sea level is rising. There is no denying that, unless of course you are gleaning your information from conspiracy theory/misinformation websites of which there is no shortage. Small island nations are begging bigger, first world countries to do something because their land is being engulfed by the rising water.

Meanwhile, you focus on the private jets of a few people. I know the solution. Luxury taxes. Let’s tax all the polluters: private jets, super yachts, muscle cars, people who drive large vehicles but don’t need large vehicles, people that have large houses, fat people that consume too much, etc.

2. Or are they similimar to the "scientists" who in March/April of 2020 repeatedly told the American public that masks were "not" required or effective against Covid?

3. What about the scientists who told us that if you get the vaccine "You will not get Covid."

Short stuff:
You seem to be very upset when scientist or public health workers change tack based on new evidence and new findings.
I bet you are still steamed that scientists prior to 1543 told your ancestors that the sun revolved around the world.
I bet you think scientists should be charged with heresy if they propose new ideas or concepts without first getting them approved by GOP consensus.
Your attacks on science, the scientific process and scientists are not new. You and your GOP brethren are just continuing a long history of attacking science that does not agree with your political and religious feelings.

surabi - 1-10-2023 at 07:38 PM

Atta boy, JZ. Don't believe anything that scientists say- what do they know, anyway? They went to school all those years for the sole purpose of pushing some political agenda- much better to believe what your right wing buddies and conspiracy websites say- after all, they have no education or experience in these things, so they have no agenda except exposing the truth.

And by all means continue to confuse scientific theory with proven fact and vilify scientists for trying to err on the side of caution and caring whether our children and grandchildren have a future on this planet.

In all three of those examples there was no "new evidence."

In order:

1. Bat vs. Lab.

Day 1, several scientists immediately pointed the finger at the lab. They were shouted down. One woman worked at the Wuhan lab.

2. Scientists say Masks don't work.

Really? Do I need to explain things here? Why in the world would a scientist say a mask doesn't work before they have the data? And then completely reverse course 3 months later?

3. If you get the vax you won't get Covid.

I watched a very good video by Voxx (Lib based org) in March 2021. It went through the trial results of all three vaccines. The main take away from the video was that the vax's job wasn't to prevent people from getting Covid, it was to reduce sickness.

I posted the video several times on the board, as it was a very educational. It was the reason I decided to get the J&J vax.

Here is the rub. From May to July of 2021 multiple scientists (including the CDC director) and news organizations were saying on repeat that the vax would keep people from getting Covid. There was no new evidence. They just lied.

Summary

In all 3 scenarios, the "scientist" declared their results as 100% fact. Within 3-12 months each one of those "facts" was reversed. No new evidence was introduced.

Meanwhile, legit arguments against each were suppressed.

And by all means continue to confuse scientific theory with proven fact and vilify scientists for trying to err on the side of caution and caring whether our children and grandchildren have a future on this planet.

Attacking me without trying to debate the actual evidence isn't a winning formula.

S,

Know any people who live off research grants? How many major issues would you like listed where the official scientific position was wrong?

Let’s just list a couple.

1) The continental plates are too large to move! Wrong!

2) We’re entering another “Ice Age”! Wrong!

3) The treatment for stomach ulcers is surgery! Wrong!

4) The world’s supply of oil and gas will be depleted in a few decades! Wrong at least 5 different times since the 1890s!

5) “Mother Nature is mad at us! - Ellen De generes” depends on whether or not you’re a Druid!

Goat,

You got it wrong! Your school didn’t teach European History?

The Catholic Church burned heretics not books! Which, along with the name calling fails to deal with the fact that big science is usually wrong before they move in the direction of being right.

See above examples!

Clarkie,
The Spanish Inquisition sure burned a lot of books. I suppose the French and Italian inquisitors did their fair share of book burning too.
Where did you read that inquisition did not burn books?
Now that digital has replaced hard copy, how will you MAGA types burn knowledge on the internet?

RFClark - 1-10-2023 at 08:44 PM

Goat,

“Poking you is more rewarding!”

As is ignoring anything that runs counter to what you believe! BTW, how much water is running down your street?

Sorry, I oversimplified the subject.

The Inquisition burned heretics not books. A different church office published the list of banned books and was responsible for burning them.

Same Church but two different and separate church offices!

BajaMama,

The issue isn’t whether “climate change exists” as the earth’s climate has always changed, often far more then now.

The issue is will putting the people in charge who live in estates on the beach, operate fleets of SUVs and travel in private jets actually reverse climate change? Is doing business at the “do as We say, not as we do” stand going to improve things for the little people like us?

Inane, at best.

Clark, and JZ, worry about how those with more money spend their money.

You have nothing to whine about Clark. You come across as cheap.

Can you ask JZ to stop whining about other countries and how they pollute the environment. What the hell does that have to do with Baja?

I've never been aware of so many unhappy people on one forum.

There is truth in that climate change has been a dynamic process since the beginning. However, the RATE of this era of change is new. Well, except for the meteor events which cause immediate and drastic change.

RFClark - 1-11-2023 at 01:04 PM

S,

Apparently you don’t, won’t or can’t read!

The issue isn’t whether the climate is changing as it has in the past many times often in days not years or millenniums. Volcanos and rocks from the sky as just two examples of changes in days. Neither are very predictable by science.

The issue today is what are the most important man caused effects on the climate and are the people trying to control aspects of our lives because of “man caused effects on the climate” addressing those most important effects first or even addressing them at all?

My opinion is no and I can support that with facts and science!

Stop yapping about right wingers and deal with that issue!

Interesting read but remember Corporations are people too.

"DENVER (AP) — Exxon Mobil’s scientists were remarkably accurate in their predictions about global warming, even as the company made public statements that contradicted its own scientists’ conclusions, a new study says.

The study in the journal Science Thursday looked at research that Exxon funded that didn’t just confirm what climate scientists were saying, but used more than a dozen different computer models that forecast the coming warming with precision equal to or better than government and academic scientists.

This was during the same time that the oil giant publicly doubted that warming was real and dismissed climate models’ accuracy."

Sounds like the playbook of a certain popular 'news' network. Believe one thing but say the other so you can bamboozle the lazy illiterate all for the mighty peso. :saint:

lewmt - 3-15-2023 at 09:23 AM

Meanwhile on the little atoll I work on we are experiencing the lowest low tides ever seen in recorded history - we had to extend the ramp to our dock which has served well for over 20 years. Additionally every prediction for catastrophe that should have come true by now has NOT happened....at what point do you actually question the "science"?

You cant see The forest for the trees!

One Anecdote from one atoll does not change the world-wide sea level rise being observed.

One wet la nina winter for portions of the usa does not negate the long term drought observed in the west, nor the global warming, global climate change being observed.

And you forgot to mention the super warm winter being observed in NE this year…

There is one absolute about water on earth-

The total amount of water on the earth has not changed in thousands of years.

There is no water shortage ONLY a distribution issue.

The earth has changed its tilt 6 times in its history along with a subsequent change in climates in specific area around the globe.

Back in the age of dinosaurs there was much more CO2 and O2 in the atmosphere. Also a higher average temperature.

12,000 years ago we had glaciers in Chicago If modern man is the cause of "Global Warming" and the retreating glaciers today then where did the glaciers go 12,000 years ago when man was basically nonexistent?

They have looked back many thousands of years at deposits in ice cores to analyze the relationship between temperature and CO2 levels.

They do roughly track each other, but it is CO2 that tracks temperature.

Don’t be stupid Cliffy. Smoking kills, even if we are all going to die anyways. Man’s GHG is causing warming now, even if warming would occur another time for another reason.
We know our gas is causing warming, and that warming is disruptive now, so why not stop doing what is causing the destruction? Perhaps the world climate would be better for our society if we hadn’t flocked it up, eh? Let’s unflock it.

Uh oh… science!

Sea levels rising rapidly in southern U.S., study finds

A study published Monday finds sea-level rise along the coast of the southeastern United States has accelerated rapidly since 2010, raising fears that tens of millions of Americans’ homes in cities across the South will be at risk from flooding in the decades to come.

“It’s a window into the future,” Sönke Dangendorf, an assistant professor of river-coastal science and engineering at Tulane University, who co-authored the study that appeared in Nature Communications, told the Washington Post.

That paper and another published last month in the Journal of Climate find that sea levels along the Gulf Coast and the southern Atlantic Coast have risen an average of 1 centimeter per year since 2010. That translates to nearly 5 inches over the last 12 years, and it is about double the rate of average global sea-level rise during the same time period.

The Journal of Climate study found that the hurricanes that have recently hammered the Gulf Coast, including Michael in 2018 and Ian — which was blamed in the deaths of 109 Floridians last year — had a more severe impact because of higher sea levels.

“It turns out that the water level associated with Hurricane Ian was the highest on record due to the combined effect of sea-level rise and storm surge,” Jianjun Yin, a climate scientist at the University of Arizona and the author of the Journal of Climate study, told the Post.

Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show the water level at Lake Pontchartrain, an estuary bordering New Orleans, is eight inches higher than it was in 2006. Other cities threatened by rising oceans in the region include Houston, Miami and Mobile, Ala.

The centimeter-per-year rate is far faster than experts had expected, and it is more in line with projections made for the end of the century, Dagendorf said. High-tide flooding — when the tides bring water onto normally dry land on rain-free days — has more than doubled on the Gulf Coast and Southeast coast since the beginning of this century, according to NOAA. Recent years have seen records for high-tide flooding obliterated. The city of Bay St. Louis, Miss., went from three days of high-tide flooding in 2000 to 22 days in 2020.

A study by scientists with the University of Miami, NOAA, NASA and other institutions, which has not yet undergone peer review, found that the Southeastern sea-level rise accounted for “30%-50% of flood days in 2015-2020.”

“In low-lying coastal regions, an increase of even a few centimeters in the background sea level can break the regional flooding thresholds and lead to coastal inundation,” the study said.
