Crossed southbound at Tijuana

Crossing at Tijuana I was driving my 28 foot RV towing a Jeep Liberty heading south this last Friday. I pretty much knew that I would be pulled in to secondary and I was.

A female agent asked for both my registrations and my passport and went into the building and a few minutes later a young uniformed military guy came out and in Spanish asked to look around my RV. He came in wearing his mask covering only his mouth and started his search in the drawers, etc. He was very pleasant but hit the jackpot when he saw I had some fresh fruit. All in Spanish he said no fresh fruit. I joked around that I was on a special diet and it still was a no go. He continued his search and I told him I had more in the refrigerator and now he hit the mother load of fruit, lettuce and veggies.

After a pleasant talk he told me that when another inspector comes in I will have to pay or have the fruit and veggies taken away. After nicely telling him I won't pay, take the fruit and veggies he changed his tune and the subject never came up again.

I asked him the rules and he said no meat, chicken or pork. No fresh fruit or veggies. I didn't have any meat, chicken or veggies so that was a mute point.

It was always a pleasant conversation but it seemed like he wanted a few pesos for me bringing in the fruit.

All in all it was not a bad experience and if that’s their rules, it’s their rules. If you are heading south of Ensenada take the coast road passing the marina to the t intersection to the end, turn left and then turn right on the main highway. Lots or construction on the main highway in town and you can avoid it this way.

Heading to Loreto in about a week and will give a report on that part of the trip.

I forgot, they never asked for my FMM (or whatever you call it) and never asked for my Residente Permenente.

Exactly... very voluntary to honor these laws of Mexico!

Hi Howard, if you’re a residente permanente you don’t need an FMM.

Hi Paul

I completely understand that but they asked for neither.

Don't know if my RP card means anything at secondary but would have pulled it out anyway.

I would of if there would of been any potential problems but it went very smooth after I said I wouldn't pay. Kept it back to use as my ace in the hole even though it might not of made any difference.
