Talk Baja's NEW (non-facebook) Platform

BajaGringo - 1-12-2022 at 08:42 PM

Talk Baja started out back in 2008 as a small and simple forum to hang out with just a few of my close friends online but that didn't last long as we began attracting new members and eventually I made the decision to move to Facebook - thinking I would have less hassles with a growing member base.

On Facebook we grew by leaps and bounds and I suspect we will surpass 65 thousand members by this coming weekend. And that's not counting all members and followers of our branched off Baja groups and pages which today number well over 300,000.

With all of the growth and increased posting volume also came an increasing volume of complaining these past few years - mostly due to members tired of seeing repeated questions from newbies or post topics that simply did not reflect their Baja interests.

I tried my best with the limited tools given me by Facebook to manage the group but we reached the point where it became painfully obvious that another solution was needed. And so I began work on developing a new platform for the group back in late 2020 and today have the basic working structure up and running.

This afternoon we began phase 3 of testing the new platform and tomorrow I will begin the process of "filling in the blanks", adding more content to the pages.

The Groups and their Sub-Forums however are completely up and running.

When users initially join, they will automatically be subscribed to all 20 groups and as they use the website over time may "unsubscribe" from any of those groups whose topics they really are not interested in.

Your "Notifications of New Activity" dropdown will reflect your choices in subscriptions, showing you ONLY those post topics created in those Groups you want to follow.

If any of you would like to sign up and give the new platform a spin, I'd welcome your feedback. I'd also appreciate your help spotting any remaining bugs that may exist in the software.

Here is the link where you can sign up, if interested:

Thank you!

OK, signed up and made my first post (in the Spanish Missions & El Camino Real section).

I've signed up as well. Facebook groups are good for a few dozen up to maybe a hundred or so active members. Beyond that, one is at the mercy of algorithms that decide which posts appear at the top of a thread - and searching a busy Facebook group is nearly impossible. So while the groups are "free", they can become victims of their own popularity, which seems to have been the case with TalkBaja.

The new site is nicely laid out and is using a more modern framework. I look forward to visiting!

While i joined the new site, my loyalty lies with nomadlandia. So far, the content here in nomadlandia is superior

This thread appears to have been started in attempt to poach customers of nomad, a bit uncool in my book…
