How did we get hooked on fishing?

My Grandparents gave me a giant kids fishing kit when I was six. I learned to cast, tie line, and use the various lures.

In 5th grade I was given my first saltwater reel and pole from my parents. Best gift ever!

Now I have many rods, reels and tackle. Used mostly for my East Cape trips.

Positive news as requested by David K. Over the past several years I have been helped by David, Doug, and so many others. Always very generous with their experiences. Also miss the Toy Drive headed up by FDT. He is missed!

For me it was my Dad. First, half day boats out of Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, a little later, around the mid 1950’s, Ensenada. Great memories.

Very nice, Scot!

Fishing is why we went to Baja, beginning when I was a kid... Getting the Jeep Wagoneer and Lower California Guidebook was to get to the fishing spots.

Becoming campers was part of the life of Baja fishing... We all fished (mom, dad, and I)!

Driving on Baja's dirt roads was an adventure... Seeing historic sites was interesting to my mom... I was influenced by both my parents. However, when my dad passed away, I hardly ever fished again... It was something we did together and it didn't have the same thrill without him.

My first dorado, Cabo San Lucas, after driving 'the road' to there from Tijuana in 1966 (I was just under 9 years old):

You fisherman are crazy!

I just don't get it. It's so easy to go to a restaurant and order some fish and walk away. So much cheaper, you don't have to wake up at 5:00 A.M. and you certainly don't smell like a vile dead fish.

There is the possibility of danger at every turn and they say direct sun is not good for the skin.

Catch the fish, clean the fish, clean the boat, fill up the boat with gas and of course the expense of upkeep, insurance and storage of the boat.

Oh yeah, the bonding of fellow fisherman. B.S., the comradery can be done at Happy Hour.

It makes no sense to me but I can't wait to do it again.

Love it Howard. And your photos David!
Price per pound catching our own fish is laughable.
My most expensive was a family trip to Dutch Harbor. We brought back 150 lbs of Salmon and Halibut. The restaurant there cooked some up for our dinner.
Lets just leave it at very expensive!
Makes Baja fishing seem reasonable.

San Felipe with a beer can wrapped with fishing line, spark plug for a weight, a hook and squid for bait. My dad started us out like this on our first few trips. Must of been 4 years old when we stated. We caught a lot of fish using this system and still do today sometimes.

Very cool story, Paul!
Your dad is a class act and so fun to go camping with!

Yup, and when that clicker goes off it’ll act as a great vibrator!
