Sweet Baja overlanding video:

David K - 7-11-2022 at 08:16 AM

Posted by Nate Z. shows a pair of Tacomas in central Baja having a great Baja trip... Can you ID the locations? I see Agua Verde, Morro Santo Domingo, & L.A. Bay. The narrow sandy bottom canyon they are driving in, any ideas, Harald?

RFClark - 7-11-2022 at 08:40 AM

Very nice drone camera work. Any idea what they are flying?

AKgringo - 7-11-2022 at 09:03 AM

That is my idea of exploring Baja. Many of those scenes are so familiar, but difficult to place.

bajatrailrider - 7-11-2022 at 09:47 AM

SOOO cool David thank you reminds me of pole line road tour 2015.

David K - 7-11-2022 at 10:11 AM

OK... just got a reply from the owner of the video. The canyon drive from 0:47-0:58 is NOT in Baja! That is Sandstone Canyon in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

AKgringo - 7-11-2022 at 10:37 AM

Well, that will save me some effort trying to find it. That is not one of the spots that looked familiar, I think I would have remembered that one.

Right... It looked familiar to me because I have been in Sandstone Canyon a few times... but the closest Baja place to that is Matomí Canyon, only the sand was washed away on my last visit and big rocks required getting over now.

I would guess a DJi Mini or Mini Pro.

The new drones are really tiny, yet quite powerful..

Super cool, odd they added Borrego to the mix. We would have been trying to locate that for a while.

He said they went there before crossing the border.

Mateo-Feo - 7-11-2022 at 04:57 PM

I guess we will allow that then.. ;)

since we now have posts and images from Turkey, Anza Borrego could be considered Baja California

bajatrailrider - 7-12-2022 at 12:38 PM

good one ABC:D

David K - 7-12-2022 at 01:57 PM

I think Blanca has been posting the Turkey photos in the NON-BAJA TRIP forum, hasn't she??

10 seconds of Anza-Borrego in a multi-minute video is not really a violation, is it? Especially, since we would not even know that unless I asked the photographer/ drone pilot.

Keeping things honest

AKgringo - 7-12-2022 at 02:05 PM

I have to come clean about my dog photos that were recently posted....the one of Bailey curled up on my bed was taken in Anchorage.

I feel so much better now!

Mateo-Feo - 7-12-2022 at 02:29 PM

I say it with a light heart. We could have been trying to figure out where that was for a LONG time.

Mulege Canuck - 7-12-2022 at 04:38 PM

The term “Overlanding”.

Basically your driving a truck on gravel road or beach sand. Why use the term over landing ?

Seems best suited those ridiculous European vehicles you see in Baja.

SFandH - 7-12-2022 at 05:32 PM

Yes, those European rigs are outrageous aren't they? What are they thinking?

I just overlanded to the OXXO a few blocks away for a 6-pack. A couple of potholes in the asphalt. Perhaps I should have aired down.

“over landing?” It’s the trendy word today. Maybe in 10 years middle class kids will revert to calling it what I call it: road-tripping or car-camping, best said with irony.

It's a term that originated more than a 100 years ago in Australia.

Has been used here for probably 7-10 years, gaining a lot of momentum in the last 4-5 years. There are all sorts of Overlanding Expo's out there.

Did the aborigines spell #overlanding with a hash tag?

:lol::lol:

AKgringo - 7-12-2022 at 06:20 PM

Aside from going oversize on tires, and minor tweaks to the suspension, my rigs have all been stock.

I enjoy the challenge of seeing just where I can go with them and get back from. It is also a lot easier on the bank account.

pacificobob - 7-12-2022 at 06:20 PM

Sort like "off roading" = driving on a non asphalt surface

liknbaja127 - 7-12-2022 at 06:54 PM

Very, Very, Cool Video. Drone work was awesome! and the music Was perfecto!

off road and off roading is actually the reason why the 4x4 marketing people (of almost all brands) introduced overlanding.
Off roading had achieved such a bad reputation that car makers were concerned it would hurt the sales of SUVs.
A greenwashing concept was needed.
I remember a season where one brand had an artist scribble with a sharpie over beautiful images of their truck in the wild.
To pretend it did not really happen.
No vegetation was hurt during the presentation.

A positive side effect was that "overlanding" attracted new clients who loved the idea of $500 bamboo cutting boards.
With that the last whiff of read neck sport was gone.
Overlanding claims to be environmentally responsible.

Great work!!!

I admire the drone owner's guts. I can imagine the wind challenges in some of the scenes, for such a lightweight drone.

Let's not forget history of the first 'Overland'... Willys Overland, who built the first civilian Jeep (CJ) and first four-wheel-drive station wagon, or "SUV"...

What about Bantam?

AKgringo - 7-13-2022 at 07:25 AM

If I have my history right, the original concept was by Bantam, an offshoot of American Austin. They were not able to meet the production demand without major re-tooling, so they merged (or were absorbed) by Willys.

Indeed the American Bantam Car Company produced the first 'jeep' vehicle, beating Ford and Willys-Overland in answering the Army's request.

However, I was responding to the use of the word "overlanding" with the first "Overland" civilian 4x4... Willys Overland.

Here is the photo of first 'jeep' at the Bantam factory (Model #1). They next produced two more models (BRC-60 and BRC-40) for testing alongside Ford's 'Pygmy' and 'GP' and Willys-Overland's 'Quad' and 'MA'. Several BRC-40s were shipped to Russia to help their war effort before we were in the war.

Willys had the most powerful engine, and won in the end. However, their factory could not produce the quantity so Ford also made the Willys model, calling it the 'GPW' from Ford. Poor American Bantam, all they were contracted to do in the end was make trailers to be pulled behind the Jeeps.

Thank you American Bantam for creating the first 'Jeep'!
