Choral Pepper's Desert Cook Book & Jack Pepper's Driving Guide

David K - 7-21-2022 at 05:54 AM

From 1966, a camping cook book and desert camping guide that includes how to drive in the desert (hint: lower the air pressure in the tires).

Choral and Jack Pepper owned Desert Magazine in the 1960s and came to know one of their subscribers, Erle Stanley Gardner (Perry Mason creator).

Inside are some very interesting recipes, including a couple are on how to cook sea turtle (when it wasn't illegal). Most involve the use of a Dutch oven... I will share one Baja inspired recipe...

Sounds delicious but how times have changed. Don't eat anything out of a can anymore except for occasional tuna. Dehydrated onions, what? It's easier to find an illegal turtle to eat than a green bell pepper in Baja.. Onboard with bacon grease but worry that it still contains the nitrates we're now to avoid. Corn muffin mix? Is that a thing? Haven't left Mexico for 7.5 years, do I need to go shopping in California to make this Mexican delicacy?

Read all those books in the late 80's. Part of the reason I'm here. Would love to read them again. Maybe online?
