I was helping a lady who is moving from Rosarito Beach area to Yucatan and does not intend to leave Yucatan.
She already has her temp. residence visa and has applied for permanent.
I was surprised that her car ownership was not questioned at that time. The bank still owns it, I believe. One person on Facebook told her that she
can't use the ferry unless it is paid off and she has title! Any comments?
Q: Is there some other form or permit to get on the ferry at La Paz other than the TIP which takes a $400 deposit?
Does she just lose that deposit since she won't be driving back to the U.S. or ??

She might be better off to sell the car in California (I assume that is where it is plated) and buy a car in Mexico. Otherwise, she is in for
continuing hassles.

Hassles for what? She is an old lady but very intelligent and wants as many answers as she can get. She leaves at the end of the month or very soon in
September.
Do you any more sage advice I can pass along.
PS She is from the East Coast (I think), not California. The car is full of her house possessions, so that is how she is moving to Yucatan.

I have gotten a TIP for my truck a dozen times. It is required to go to San Carlos in Sonora if you are taking toys with you (bikes, RZR, etc.).
Also took the truck from Santa Rosalia to Guaymas once on the ferry.
You don't need title to get a TIP. Just current registration. Meaning the vehicle doesn't need to be paid off.
Yes the ferry will require a TIP. Also, you need one to drive on the mainland South of Guaymas.
Once in Baja she doesn't need the TIP. She can get it cancelled and get her deposit back at the border at a Banjercito office.
Now where to get the TIP? She can get the TIP online. They will FedEx it, probably only to a US address. So, she will need to get it to MX.

Where in the Yucatan will she be living is the first question to answer.
If it is Quintana Roo, it is considered is "Free Zone of Mexico" just like Baja Norte & BCS. So she "should" be able to drive a "US plated"
vehicle in the state of Quintana Roo without a "TIP".
The problem is getting to Quintana Roo! Going through other Mexican states to get there will require a "TIP" so that means putting a deposit down for
the "TIP". The only way to get the "TIP" deposit back is to drive the vehicle back to the border...or at least that is my understanding. The "TIP"
expiration date will be the same date her Temp Resident expires. If/when she gets her R/P, will that will throw a big monkey wrench into this
equation.
If she is not going to be in the state of Quintana Roo she will have a problem driving a US plated vehicle since R/Ps can not drive a car with a
"TIP".
Read this article under "Mexico Free Zone Perimeters". And yes, a TIP is required for the La Paz ferry. Years ago when we took the ferry from Los
Mochis to La Paz, we were told we would have to drive our SUV back to the border to have the TIP removed and our name removed from the computer data
base. At that time (2008) no deposit was required so we still have the TIP.
I need to read posts more closely. I thought she was moving from Yutacan to Rosarito Beach.

It is also my understanding that if a TIP is not turned-in before it expires, the person that is named on the TIP is "flagged" in the data base and
will not be able to bring a second vehicle into Mexico via the TIP system.
This happened to some friend of ours...the first expired TIP was in his name. He tried to get a second TIP so they could bring a second vehicle,
which was also titled in his name, to BCS via Los Mochis ferry but was denied at Nogales, Mexico. They had to turn around, drive back into the US
then over to Baja Norte and down to BCS.
Just trying to think outside the box on this subject...Good Luck.

At least that has been the case for quite some time. As always in Mexico, enforcement can vary.
And while Quintana Roo may be in the "free zone" with respect to vehicles, the only way to get it there without having a TIP is probably to have it
shipped there.
I am of the opinion that she should sell the vehicle in the States and buy a Mexican plated vehicle down there. Just way easier, especially if she is
going the permanente route. Buy a returned, leased vehicle from a dealer down there, which has a decent chance of having been maintained. A Rav 4 or a
Mazda CX-3 or 5 would be good choices.
