Hurricane Orlene drive-by

pauldavidmena - 9-29-2022 at 12:18 PM

According to the National Hurricane Center, Orlene is the next storm to flirt with Baja. The "Cone of Uncertainty" includes the southernmost tip.

I have been following that system and the original track had it falling apart west of Baja. I just checked the "Windy" site in the rain and thunder mode, and this is what it shows for mid-day Monday; ( It looks like you will have to advance the date yourself)

One day later, Weather Underground shows Orlene missing Baja and instead making landfall in or around Mazatlan.

Cat 4 headed to the mainland.

Another high-intensity storm.

The latest on Orlene is a dream for those fortunate enough to be on the East Cape and know where to go with the somewhat southeast swell direction.

Those who know, know where to go for a rare break that for some years never shows.

To the locals, ride some for the rest of us that can't be there. Of all the breaks in Baja I have come across, this remains a singular favorite. The rarity is its own. When you catch it going off, you will never forget it.

Don't ask. haha You know or you don't. Ask a local and see how far you get. haha

Orlene, you are a blessing , until you are not. Baja haha. For now, you are the bomb. No guarantees for later.

It's a small, compact cyclone. Highest wind speeds around 30-40mph. Just passed us this afternoon here on the coast north of Puerto Vallarta, light intermittent drizzle, no wind at all. Might peter out by the time it hits the mainland, just dumping rain.

My mother lives 3 streets from the beach in Mazatlan.....Manana will be a crazy day....Hope to get some updates from her in the morning.

Hope she's got a plan to move to higher ground just in case, and not wait too long if it's looking grim.

I found one PWS in La Manzanilla that has received almost 10 inches of rain today and about 17 inches total, over the last three days.

At one point, it was coming down at a rate of 3.5 inches per hour!!!
