Yet another jewel of a post by JZ, presenting his opinion as some sort of fact.
More evidence of why you need guards to travel to Mexico. Try telling the new "friends" you think you make on your Mexico trips that soccer sucks.

I say boycott the world cup. Qatar and FIFA are an abomination as far as human rights are concerned. I will not be watching any of the games.

Anybody here rooting for Mexico?

Hook - 11-22-2022 at 03:57 PM

Yet another spate of 0-0, 1-1 and 2-1 games.

How exciting...

Really, the total number of CHANCES to score is so low in soccer. Unless a complete mismatch occurs like ENG-IRAN or FRA-AUS. BEL-CAN will probably be another one.

So far, 16 teams have played, through today, Tuesday Nov 22. Of those 16, 10 teams scored one or fewer goals. Six teams scored none.

The skills, and particularly the stamina, of the players IS impressive, though.

I'll leave the politics out of sports. Plenty of it everywhere else.

That kneeling in front of the flag is a sign of disrespect is simply a stupid interpretation made by racist right-wingers. What about all the people who kneel to pray? Are they disrespecting the god they are kneeling on front of?

If someone truly had the intention to show disrespect, seems to me they would turn their back to the flag.

Meanwhile you have nothing to say about all the supposed "patriots" who parade about draped in American flags, which is actually against the American Flag Act (which mentions nothing about kneeling in front of the flag)- "wearing" the flag like an item of clothing is definitely considered to be a sign of disrespect.

Meanwhile, there have been 4 mass killings in the US in just the past week. I should think that Americans have more important issues to concern themselves with than whether sports figures kneel in front of the flag to protest racist inequality.

Canada looking pretty good, so far. They've had the best chances.

My other pet peeve about soccer is this ridiculous running clock and the always speculative amount of time "left" at the end of each half.

And, really, deciding a tied game with a shootout, while probably the most exciting portion of a soccer game, is an admission that a game could go on for facking ever before someone might score again.

Hook - 11-23-2022 at 12:51 PM

Oh look, a goal! Canada down 1-0 at the half.

So far, today, one 0-0 game, one 2-1 game and the expected blowout.

Yesterday's tally: an 0-0 game, a 1-0 game, a 2-1 game and a 7-0 blowout.

So, there is still a majority of teams, overall, that have not scored a single goal.

Today's tally so far: an 0-0 game, a 1-0 game and a game tied 0-0 at the half.

Boy, if the tryptophan in the turkey doesn't get you, today, watching these games will.

After the disappointing tie versus a continuing subject of the Crown (Wales), the US would do well to earn a tie against England.

I have not watched a lot of soccer. Is the dramatic "flop" still a common strategic move? :?:

surabi - 11-24-2022 at 10:27 AM

While I am not a sports fan, I can understand people enjoying watching various sports. What seems stupid to me is people having "my team" that they root for and get all upset about if they lose.

It seems a lot like following the escapades of some "celebrity" and getting all wrapped up in the lives of people you don't know and who don't know or care about you in the slightest.

That's what team sports is mostly about. A simulated battle between two 'clans' of people. This goes way back in time. Even in Troy the war was preceded with the battle between Achilles and Hector. I have a friend who is totally apechit over the Rams. The house is cluttered with flags, helmets, other paraphenalia.

Personally I find soccer boring. The teams are too big which puts a stranglehold on offense. Goals occur almost always due to mistakes or accidents. Don't understand the attraction. Back and forth they keep running. With no results.

Hook - 11-24-2022 at 11:43 AM

WOW, five goals in one half, split almost evenly between two teams! Now, that must have been exciting!! Portugal survives, 3-2.

But, I wasn't watching........these things happen to infrequently in soccer.

Yes, I realize that. And I can appreciate that "play war" might satisfy the types who prefer competition to cooperation and feel the need to take sides and vicariously be on some "team". It just seems like that "us against them" mentality is the opposite attitude from that which makes for civilized human relations.

That's different from just enjoying watching people do something they excel at, whether it's sports, music, or whatever. For instance, I enjoy watching gymnastics- I couldn't care less who wins the gold or silver medals,I just appreciate the amazing skill these athletes have.

JZ - 11-24-2022 at 11:56 AM

Was in Amsterdam one year during the World Cup. Everytime the Netherlands scored all the fire trucks in the city played their sirens and every single person cheered.

Then you are an exception. Consider this - how many people continue to watch their team when they're not doing well? How much interest do you have seeing gymnasts from say Bolivia perform? For most it's about the medal count.

The same level of interest as seeing a skilled gymnast from anywhere perform. My level of interest in someone's abilities has nothing to do with their nationality.

That wasn't meant as "wanting to start a discussion on firearms". As I said, I mentioned nothing about firearms, those are your words. And perhaps you should be calling out the poster that was in response to, who just had to make a comment about "disrespect", referring to kneeling in front of the flag.

And FYI, some of those mass killings had nothing to do with firearms- there were knife killings, too.

Have you ever watched American football? Games last 3.5 hours, and the ball is in play about 12 minutes of that time. The duration of instant replays is longer than the actual ball in play. The duration of commercial breaks far outnumbers the supposed 60 minutes of games time. 60 minutes? It’s about 12 minutes of ball in play! American Football is all about watching commercials and watching players stand around in huddles, and stand around waiting to play. American football, most boring sport in the world.

surabi - 11-26-2022 at 08:36 AM

I'd agree with that, Goat. They play for a few seconds or a minute and then stop. Super tedious to watch, akin to watching paint dry. Mostly an excuse to sit around drinking beer and ogling the cheerleaders.

At least in baseball they don't keep stopping after a minute of play.

Male bashing comment? Perhaps the question should be why female cheerleaders in skimpy costumes seem to be an integral part of American football, if not to pander to ogling by males.

The thought of kissing your sister was comparable back in the 60's when I played high school football for one season and one season only.

That was enough for us to do everything we could to avoid a tie.

I once stood across the line from a behemoth of a lineman who was easily two hundred pounds while I was a linebacker carrying 130 pounds at the most. All I did was prevent a completed pass and almost caught it, but it was not to be for my football career.

The next year surfing had me committed and has ever since.

The thought of a tie still feels the same. What is the point of kissing your sister? haha

Soccer needs to modernized their game.

The hooligan fans are unique in sports like no other. FIFA is as corrupt an organization as there is. Passion for sports can be a good thing when it is not taken to extremes like soccer fans show all too often.

I don't watch soccer. I don't watch any organized sports other than tennis, sailing, and surfing. We are a rather mild group of fans. I could not care less about where a player is from or what country he represents when it comes to his own abilities in the completion. I root for whoever individually plays the best game on any given day.

Have at it.

What we are leaving for future generations will not be appreciated, but we will all be long gone. It is up to us to provide a livable planet for our generations to come. Denial is a dis-ease we can overcome.

So why are the male cheerleaders not wearing skimpy outfits?

Because neither men or women want to see that.

First of all, thanks for the appreciation.

As for what I quoted here, it doesn't seem particularly mysterious to me.

A.They want to continue to burn fossil fuels because it is an essential part of their lifestyle. Denying that it's a problem, or suggesting that there are no viable alternatives allows them to continue as per usual without any guilt or sense of responsilibity.

B. If solutions are proposed or implemented by politicians they oppose, they will dismiss it as wrong, whatever it may happen to be.

C. They are emotionally immature and act like "you can't tell me what to do" teenagers, regardless of whether the changes proposed are of benefit to all mankind. Their "freedom" to do as they like outweighs everything else.

So, young male athletes aren't ogled by females? Males don't want to look good to young females? Track, swimming, and wrestling attire isn't skimpy?

Are you aware that cheerleading requires team work, athletic skills, coordination, and timing? High school cheerleaders can get college scholarships? It's actually pretty empowering for young women, in spite of your misunderstanding.

A very good friend of mine is a former Chargers cheerleader (our school cheer coach) and I know she would disagree with your comments. She's heard them before, nothing new.

And, who defines "skimpy?" The "Fashion Police?"

They say women can be their own worst enemy? That's a bad stereotype as well.

Meanwhile, back at the World Cup. Proof that Americans aren't always the nuttiest people on the planet.

Riots in Brussels after a LOSS to Morocco. Cars overturned and set fire. Riots in the streets over a loss.

WTF? We only do that in the USA when our team WINS a game or a championship. Who turned over a car in LA after the Dodgers lost? Or the Lakers?

Americans are pretty timid if we lose, but all hell is released with a win.

No wonder they allow ties in soccer.

Don't be absurd. Obviously certain sports like swimming and wrestling and track require a minimum of clothing, or it would impede their ability to perform.

And while of course cheerleading requires certain skills and practice, it doesn't require showing major cleavage or tiny skirts in order to be done well. If world class gymnasts can perform in long sleeved leotards and nothing about their outfits are designed to be sexy, obviously cheerleading does not require Hooter's type outfits. It is done purely for sexualizing purposes.

And if women feel "empowered" by presenting themselves as sex objects, I would say they are pretty shallow and need to cultivate some other ways to get attention and be acknowledged for their skills.

Maybe I can put you in contact with my friend, who actually knows what cheerleading is all about.

You seem pretty hung up on fashion. Let it go. Puritanism is long dead.

Olympic ice skater outfits are not designed to be attractive? Seen any Olympic beach volleyball outfits?

Women have breasts, are you embarrassed about that?

My sister did not get through cheerleader tryouts in high school. She got over it, you can too. Let it go.

And men have penises, but it isn't considered acceptable for them to expose them in public.

Your attitude is sexist.

And cheerleading try-outs? I can assure you I had zero interest in such things. And if I had, I can assure you I would have made the team, considering I'd had 10 years of ballet and modern dance training by the time I got to high school.
And since you are obviously unaware of it, only the "popular" girls were interested in being cheerleaders, at least in my high school. The same kind of girls who dated the jocks.

Who's the one bashing cheerleaders, which has nothing to do with the World Cup? Did you read the paragraph you just wrote? You seem to have a lot of bitterness toward cheerleaders. Me thinks thou doth protest too much.

And, since I do work at a high school, I can assure you it's not 1950 anymore and lots of girls are cheerleaders, not just the popular ones. It's a mix of all kinds of girls today; all races, body types, etc. Dating "jocks" is also a pretty archaic concept as well, it's 2022, not 1952. Your stale stereotypes alone are the very definition of "sexist."

OTOH, it sounds like you might have made our dance team, they win lots of dance competitions. But, there are some talented dancers at our school.

Meanwhile, back at the World Cup:

Big day for USA tomorrow! Now, we have to win, or die. As it should be. Waiting for the Iranian chants of "Death to America" tomorrow, at least it's finally able to be used in a proper/competitive context.

I'm taking an interest in Team Ghana, lowest ranked team, kicking ass so far. Lots of heart in their team.

Chants of death to usa may be warranted,… The USA soccer org recently desecrated the Iranian flag. Can you imagine if Iranian soccer org desecrated the usa flag? Red meat ‘Mericans (even the ones who hate soccer) would lose their chit over that!

Goat, They burn our flag all the time. Consider the source!

Well, congratulations to Team USA. We got the win that was needed.

Hopefully Pulisic's injury is minor and he can return to the pitch for the next match.

That's cool. I saw a video discussing what the Iranian players face when they go back. Not a pretty picture.

Saw another video of just average ppl from all different nations getting along perfectly at the different venues.

The best athletes in the world play in the NFL.

If these guys played soccer they would win the world cup everytime.

Congrats on watching inferior athletes run around chasing each other.

I promised her we'd go to the National Championship game at So-Fi if the Buckeyes beat Georgia.

Go Bucks!

Soccer is very fun to play. Watching youth soccer is super entertaining. Remember the day my kid scored 3 goals in 10 mins to start a game on her club team at age 14. And when she scored a goal her first game in HS. She played 2 years in college.

It was fantastic hanging out with all the parents over the years. Helped coach a couple years on the early youth teams. Did the team videos for the end of season awards banquets her last two years in HS.

I played soccer for almost 10 years into HS. Love to play the game.

But the pro stuff is like watching paint dry. So, so boring.
