Distances

Frequently traveling the peninsula by van, bus and tow truck, we have noticed some peculiarities regarding signs, distances, etc.
For instance, there are signs stating that Loreto is 107 km's and Tijuana is 1493 km's and so forth.
What we were wondering is do they pick a spot in the desert and then make the sign? Or do they first make the sign and then measure the Km's as to where to put it?
Why not increments of 10? or maybe 50 or 100? Does a 7 use less paint than a 0 ?
Nevertheless, viva la diferencia!!

They put a blank sign in the ground, drive to the destination and back, divide by two, then paint the numbers.

I have seen them actually measuring with a tape. I think they walk all the way and measurer for each sign.:bounce:

I think they put place names on the signs and then draw some numbers out of a hat.

This is how they come up with the places and distances for the road signs:

1. The road crew picks a spot where one of them had broken down before
2. The location of the home of the nearest relative that he got a ride to.
3. How many Ballena were consumed on the way to the relative's house
4. And then with some complex computations, they determine the Kms.
