holes....what lives underground?....

this weekend I did a bunch of hiking around the beach area I was at and kept seeing holes in the dirt.....some are small...about the size of a pencil and others about 1-2 " in diameter...but I also saw some about a foot across!!:o...this is in the scrub bushes back from the beach and not the sand....what lives in these things....never saw anything but remember one day I saw a snake about a foot inside one of these holes...looking for lunch?.....

You need out of that city Jim!
What makes the most 2" to 4" holes in my part of the county: gophers, ground squirrels.

I once watched a big hairy tarantula come out of a hole.

There's a hole about a foot across behind my beach house just south of Bahia de Los Angeles. When I asked a worker what it was he said "Coyote den." I don't know that it's true, but I assume in the Spring the females build something like that to protect their babies.

Couple years back I took my wife on David K's "worst road in Baja" adventure. It was her first time "rough" camping, out of the back of the jeep. She went out to do her business at night, and came back and told me " there were a lot of holes all over, and I didn't see any squirrels or rabbits, so I plugged all the holes up with rocks before I could pee...:;D

Tha brings back fond memories but I won't go into them here. The wife would kill me.
