Buying a car for a Mexican friend
Although I have not know this new friend for long, I feel very close to her and would love to help. She was a single mother. Met a gringo much older
than her, married and moved to the community we have come to love. Her husb. is abusive and she is struggling to provide a life as stable as possible
for the sake of her son who is 12 yrs old. She is absolutely the best mother I have ever met. I admire her so!! Through connections she made with us
last year, she has developed relationships with other gringo's who live full time in her town. She has full time employment during the busy 10 month
tourist season. This has caused even more tension for her as her husb. does not appreciate the fact that she now has a bit of financial independence.
She is hugely employable as she is extremely trustworthy, fluent in english and very personable. The difference in her posture and pressence in the
last 18mts is incredible!
A car would really be helpful for her. Is there anyone in San Diego (or near ) who has a line on a decent vehicle. I could not afford to spend more
than $2000. Hopefully I could convince friends who will be in California in Sept. to drive it back for her.
I would also like to hear any thoughts on this idea. I admit to being new in a Mexican community. Could I be causing her more problems??

Keep in mind that any car bought in S.D will have to be "nationalized" in Baja. which will add a few hundred $$ to the cost (depending on the car).

Consider buying it in La Paz, not like it was a few years ago, car lots all over the place!

Marie-Rose, Howdy!
Just my two cents worth here: The above statement I certainly can see that in some men (and Women). Now...if she adds a car to her independence, think
that hubby of hers's will fly off the wall? Control freak he sounds like. It may cause mucho trouble for her (buying a car).
What control freaks there are here. Don\'t believe that post you just read!

be careful giving gifts especially a big one like that . I know you want to do the right thing and help your Friend but I have a felling that if her
Man wanted her to have a car she would have one. it could clause pig problems. If he is abusive then he isn't stable and he could get mad and come
after you. I think I would try to find some other way to help her and her son out like Mabey a bottle of rat poison. once he is out of the way then
you can give the car.

I have considered the fact that this might make matters worse. I quess that's why I'm throwing it out there. I would hate to make life worse for her
although, I do think that so far, she is doing better than she was. He was none too pleased when she landed a job as he had told her she was useless
and he would give her a few pesos for staying home!
I know I have seen many car lots in LaPaz I just am blown away at how low the prices are for used cars in Calif.

That's funny Bruce, I had the opportunity to talk to her this afternoon and told her exactly the same thing!!!
I guess I should also add that her employer did help her involve the police and for awhile he was somewhat better. Didn't last, though he is a bit
nervous when she threatens to call the federales.

The CA prices wont look so cheap by the time you hassle the importation fees and hoops, whatever impound and other fees during importation, the cost
of bringing it down and transfering it to her. I prefer one-stop shopping, I would buy it here.

Her "man" is a POS. If you can afford to help her, do it!

We should have a glossary or something for all these abbreviations.
PG, POS,

Hi Marie Rose,
I'm sure there are many of us in town who could help in some way. Don't have a car to sell but I agree it might be better to buy the car in La Paz.
Our buddies, the Ochoas, might be able to help.
You have my e mail address.
