Deaf and mute

I know these people, who were mentioned on the "Shrimp Shanghai" story at http://groups.msn.con/TheBajasBestGuidesPhotoAlbum.
But anyways, this family lives very far away and they are fisherpeople. I have known them for a few years and we have become friends. I take them wetsuits (you know who you are;D) and they are a major part of my trading program down south.
And they take me and my friends fishing. And because their family has always lived in this area, they know where the fish are.
Now we are by no means "sport fishermen" and we use this fish to trade with the mountan people so we like to get a lot. We don't take the chance of catching Dorado, Tuna, etc. as it uses a lot of gas, it' s kinda seasonal and it isn't for sure.
So, "Chongo and Rosaria" take us out to fish in their boat. Rosario is deaf and she can just make a few noises but they use sign, probably a version that they made themselves. But, they understand each other perfectly and are very much in love.
When we launch, Rosaria is in charge! Where and how far to go, what to fish for, all the water signs, etc. And she knows what's up, or down as the case may be.
I take fishing poles, tackle, beer, more tackle, better fishing poles, empanadas, sandwiches, seat cushions, and the works. We have looked like a Saharan caravan trapsing across the beach to the boat! But, we are ready!
This is indicative of all the trips we have made so, we get bait from other fishermen already out, (after unloading all of our supply trucks, we are usually a little tarde! But we don't worry.
We have an ace in the hole although a very quiet one.
We put on our bait, throw out the lines and hopefully catch fish. Usually we do but sometimes not a lot. I have good poles and equipment for everyone to use including Chongo and Rosaria but she has Chongo make her first cast. From then on, she catches fish. Not by using the fishing pole but hand lining the line with the fishing pole stowed.
Last time, Chongo was so busy pulling fish off her hook he fished for maybe 1 hour out of half a day. Sergio caught 7 and I caught 6. Chongo had 5 and Rosa had 37:lol::lol::lol:
Again!!
So, this has happened every time we have fished for the last 3 years. Even Chongo who has been a fisherman all his 50 some odd years doesn't understand it either. But he is very much in love!

Wow, 37 to 5 !
For me that would be like having a wife that made a $1,000,000 a year !
I'd love her too !

We won't be down again until January but will check in to drop off some goodies on the way; maybe go fishing ?

We've made quite a few friends in Baja over the years that we like to see and bring gifts to. Knowing these few has been the richest part of our Baja experiences.

Once, years ago in Cuidad Const., we were shopping in the little local grocery just west of the main drag, across from the little park. While we shopped, my daughter played on the swings and made some friends at the park. We finished our shopping just as the new friends' mother also came out of the store. We had just had a few laughs with her inside about the pork burger in the shape of a pig head. After another 5 minutes of watching our kids play together, we were invited to their home to eat. This was all communicated with our 30 word spanish vocabulary and a bunch of funny faces and movements.

They had two rooms, one with dirt floor, one with cement. They had a two burner propane stove and a griddle upon which Isabel made the most delicious corn tortillas and green chili filling I have ever eaten, bar none !!
When we left, they would accept none of the food, pesos or supplies we offered. Of course, when our kids gave their kids some pencils, paper and small toys, they couldn't refuse.

On they way north a month or so later we stopped to visit again. This time we had planned ahead ! When we left, we placed a small box of kids clothes and goodies in the back of the dead car in the yard. As we drove off, we told the kids to go see what we left.

Two years later, we shopped at the same little grocery and when we came out with our groceries, the whole family was lined up out front to say hello. We had apparently been spotted entering the store by one of the kids. All the kids were wearing some t-shirts we had left two years before ! Talk about some good feelings ! We couldn't even get to our truck. We were literally dragged two blocks to their house and fed a feast !

Isabel showed us a few old photos including her wedding photo. Much like my own grandmother, her obvious beauty as a young woman showed through as an inner glow in her older years.

Since then we have brought or sent clothes, school supplies and books whenever we can. We have three other gringo friends that have stopped in on our behalf and also rave about the fresh tortillas and green chili tacos.

If you ever get the chance, spend a few hours or a few days up close with someone who lives there. It will change you.

I am confused did you have More than one lady on board or which is it Rosa, Rosaria or Rosario? My wife tells me that Rosaria is incorrect and that Rosario is correct for both male and female names. Jrbaja help solve this family argument . I don't want to sleep on the couch tonight. with no air conditioner.

ps. our 15 year old dagthers name is Rosario

That explains so much time at the computer instead of working.
Can't believe you had to break your arm just so you could spend
more time on Nomad. :lol::lol::lol:

Good excuse to try the ice cream in the beer (the added calcium, ya know).
