Flying w/fly rods to Cabo

Does anyone have experience good or bad with bringing your precious fly rods to Mexico on the airlines?
I'm almost afraid to risk it. Don't want to put them in baggage, and don't know if I can carry them on.
Is there any way to rent fly rods down there?
I know they rent them out at Baja Anglers when you're going out with them, but I don't know about straight rentals...

I've checked my rods on a number of flights including Alaska and America West to San Jose del Cabo and Aero California to Loreto with no problems. I really wish I had a 3 or 4 piece that I could carry on but I don't. Normally I bring 2 rods - each in a quality rod tube and duct tape the tubes together. I also bring some duct tape to touch them up for the ride home. Sometimes in LAX they don't come out of the luggage belt and you have to find them by the elevator with the other oversized stuff.

Fly "poles"...

Flown to Baja many times with fly rods. I have carried on a 3 piece tube ( Alaska Airlines ) a few times with no problems, once even post 9-11. Fits in the overhead with room to spare. Though the last time I tried to carry on I was asked to check it at the counter. It arrived in Baja no problem. I've never had a problem checking fly rod tubes. Follow the advice given in the posts above, and look for your tubes in Oversize baggage when you arrive at the airport. Enjoy!

Travel Insurance

Do you know that the airlines can only be held liable for $250 per checked bag? That will barely buy you one rod, let alone several and reels to boot. I suggest looking into it. Ask your travel agent and specifically seek out a policy that will cover lost or delayed baggage expenses.

I had some clients, (actually they weren't mine but they were afterward) who arrived here from San Jose but their bags went to Guadalaraja for three days! Flyrods and all fly equipment. Boy wre they happy I had rental equipment available. since it was the airlines fault, they complained and Aero Littoral paid the rental bill plus flies totaling $250.00 no questions asked- I just had to give them a factura. If you have an uncooperative airline, but there was a place with a rental program available like Baja Anglers, this insurance policy would have footed the bill, also no questions asked.

FISH ON!!!

Many many trips back and forth to baja with multiple fly rods and never a mishap!..Sure would invest in a padded fly rod holder that includes a padded reel holder also..I have a holder that holds 2 rods safely...cool...
