A more humorous "robbery"
Baja Bernie will probably know these cantineros!
About 10 years ago Juanita still owned the Cielito Lindo bar/motel and used to give the workers honesty tests by planting a ring, watch etc in rooms
after the client left, before maids come in, to make sure the items were turned in. Never had a problem. On one occassion, Gary, from La Salina spent
a few days with us. Just before checking out, he told Juanita he was missing about $300dlls from his room, not asking for replacement money, just to
let her know she had a problem. Despite his protests, Juanita replaced his $300.
About a year passes. Two of our favorite clients from La Salina, Dick H. and Snapon stop in and say they have a surprise for Juanita. They give her
$300, saying Gary was too embarrassed to come down with them to return the money.
Seems Dick and Snapon borrowed Gary's Lincoln for a trip to the States. They were stopped at the border and asked to open the trunk, which they did
not know how to do, so were sent to secondary, where the trunk was opened and found to have residue of a green leafy substance. Carpeting was pulled
up and revealed a baggie with $300 in it. After explanations of alfafa being previously transported in the trunk, they were sent on their way.
You can imagine the fun they had with Gary at the La Salina bar, when they explained what happened on the trip. They said Gary turned beet red and
sheepishly remembered putting the money in the trunk while at Cielito Lindo.
I like this true story as it shows one example of the honesty and caring we come across so often here in Baja. Juanita did not have to replace Gary's
money, and Gary did not have to return it a year later.

approaching. They jump into their pick-up and speed by (could have hit me but probably realized that my bulk would damge their little truck) and
received a camp shovel in the windshield for their trouble. Luckily, they elected to keep going, so there is still a somewhat overweight, gray-bearded
gringo to tell the story !!

You wave a taxi down in Latin America, let's say Colombia.
On the way to your destination the driver comes to a stop light. The engine stalls and dies. He tries to start it over and over but it just doesn't
seem to start.
He leans over to your seat in back and politely asks you if you would mind helping push the vehicle while he pops the clutch.
You get out and push. Miraculously the vehicle starts right up and he drives off with your belongings - never to be seen again.

I have heard that story at least a hundred times and it is only told when Gary is present so we can watch him cough, turn beet red and talk about what
nice people, Juanita and Dave are, and how foolish he felt when he realized that the grass was not marijuana and that they were not going to toss him
in the pokey & that he owed Juanita three hundred clams.
I heard the story again this past Monday, Bubba roared, Gary blushed and Gus just laughed. Me, I just felt right at home with good Baja friends.
Sure wish you would treat the new people to this board to some of 'your' true stories of Baja. For those of you who don't know it Dave is one the
greatest storyteller in all of Baja and the stories always get better with each beer. Juanita knows many more stories but she seldom bends to the task
of telling them.
Oh! yea, Drop by and ask Juanita about the Birthday card she got naming her the greatest_________in the whole universe. Enough.

Last year in Guanajuato, when going into a little restaurant for a beer, a couple told me that I had a bunch of stuff on my light khaki slacks. Looked
like baby sh.t. The guy proceded to wet a bunch of napkins and tried to get the stuff off. It was all over the back of my legs and his efforts didn't
get it much cleaner. They left, we had our beer and when I tried to pay the tab, I found I had been neatly rolled out of about $ 700.00. He also
managed to take 2 credit cards out of my wallet, which he neatly put back in my backpocket, hoping I would not miss the cards. They managed on that
same day to put over $ 1200.00 on one card in Puebla. Wished I could have gotten my hands on that little f...ker, but no such luck.
