Alex's journal entry - a nine year old's view of baja

Today somewere along the rocky cliffs I saw a huge sea turtle with white spots on it's neck. It appered to go from the right side of the boat to the left. Papa did not see it but I did because he appered to be on the left side while I was on the right. You would thought papa would have seen it because it went to the left from the right but it dove deep while it went under the boat so when it came to his side it was impossible to see.

And that's the story of the sea turtle.

Another journal entry - Calamajue, this summer

I also caulght a 7 pound cabrilla at first it felt like I had the bottom then I started pulling it up. You can't pull the bottom up. So I thought it was weeds then it started jerking the rod. Kelp does not jerk the rod so I knew it was a fish. So I pumped him to the very top. "Boy that was hard".

That night we slept under the stars. We were sopost to rest until a breez went in the truck. "I found the big dipper" I said. "good for you" he said.

We doesed off. Later that night he checked for a breez. And guess what? It was hot like hell. So we slept out side.

the unflattering drawing of the person with glasses on the bottom is me, skipjack. Alex is pointing to the Big Dipper

Alex
You are one lucky boy to have a terrific dad to take you to all these wonderful places. And you are one smart kid to keep a journal.
I love looking for constellations in Baja. The sky seems bigger, I think.
Keep up the good work.

I do too.

That was a special night for us and I planned to write about that night sky. But in the end I thought my writing was just too sappy and I didn't post it. Yes, I think the night sky in baja is one of the peninsula's greatest treasures ... one that is often taken for granted.

Great Job Alex!

Alex, that is great to write about your Baja trips! My dad and mom took me to Baja when I was 9 years old, also! I collected rocks each time we went and also drew a map of the area we camped to help me remember the really great places in Baja California!

Here is a picture of me when I was 9, this is at Molino de Calamajue, at the mouth of Calamajue canyon and across the arroyo from the mission ruins (only melted adobe now)... which is not far from Puerto Calamajue where you were!

(I liked wearing army surplus clothes when camping!)

My favorite part is the reconstruction of the event. You can imagine him telling the story.
Shew, all that apperin' pooped me out!
