Fire in Bajamar Area

Ok, I went for a drive this morning to see what damage the fire has done.It started up on the mesa behind La Mision/La Salina last night. It jumped the highway last night when the wind picked up again ,looks like just past Angels camp.It burned all the perimeters of Bajamar.Burned up to the green grass of the course but as much as I could see no houses burned. Sure looked like it last night ,big things ablaze. It burned all the way to just this side of Salsipuedes. Looks like a house might have been lost in the olive grove just past the rest area.. Amazing but as big as the fire was I don't think they lost many dwellings if any. I do know a friend that has his horses and sheep up on the mesa and said he and 9 other ranchers in the area have lost all their grazing land. They are going to have to move them to the east side of the highway but he says there is no water there. It is devastating for them. Angels camp and La Salina were not touched that I could see. Still fires burning up on the mesa going towards Ensenada. Also new fire burning to the north of me in the hills behind Primo Tapia. Hope the wind stays down tonight or it could come down to that little town like it did to Bajamar last night. Say your prayers for all these people they are going to need all the help they can get. End of report for now,k

This is a HUGE fire, now only a few miles (in some spots, less) from the toll road. Covers a 140 degree arc starting from near due North to Southward. Tonight we moved out all important documents and shut down the power and gas. When I got in the car to leave the deli it was covered in ash.:O

Tomorrow, I may have to run a special on smoked meats, cheeses and produce.

Thanks Keri. It looks like the fires have cooled down for the night. I can see that we'll probably be OK at least through most of tomorrow but you never know.

I expect that things will heat up again in the morning. If we can get through one more day without wind we might just dodge the bullet.

What a difference a day makes!

It looks like all of the fire that had threatened populated areas has been beaten down. There is still lots of fire back in the hills, though. I guess if/when that becomes a problem the bomberos will deal with it.

Hey Dave and all-- Was flying into SD today and counted what I thought were 5 fires in Baja. Glad everything seems OK but I think I better make sure and check things out. And of course the best spot to evaluate the situation should be about a mile west of Baja Mar!!! Ha!! Fish for everyone!!
Hey if I miss you at BC Wed., have a great Thanksgiving!!!

Last word/hopefully on the fires

November 23, 2005

Tijuana and Baja California News

Baja Blazes Keep Firefighters Scrambling

Firefighters and other emergency response personnel in
Baja California had their hands full in recent days
battling a series of wild blazes across the northern
Mexican state. Since November 14, more than 6,000
acres of landscape have burned up around Tijuana,
Ensenada, Tecate and other areas. Chaparral, pasture
and coastal brush all went up in smoke as winds
carried flames to new hotspots. Approximately 500
people were evacuated for their own protection.
Twenty-one homes caught on fire in Tijuana last
weekend

"There have been some difficult hours, but we haven't
had any deaths to lament," commented Manuel Machain
Cazarez, the director of the Tijuana fire department.
"The prinicipal cause is the Santa Ana winds."

In a press conference attended by state and other
officials, Juan Pablo Hernandez, Baja California's
secretary of agro-fisheries development, said
fire-fighting coordination between the three levels of
government-federal, state and municipal-was moving
forward. In addition to regular firefighters, federal
personnel from the National Foresty Commission and
Mexican Defense Ministry lent a helping hand.

Persistent fires in two large garbage heaps were among
the biggest problems that confronted responders. One
blaze hit an illegal dump in El Alamar, while a second
fire broke out in Tijuana's old municipal dump. It's
not known if any hazardous substances were on blaze at
the fire scenes. At least 337 wild fires affecting
more than 75,000 acres have been reported in Baja
California during 2005.
