Mexico as well as the US were signatories of an international banking agreement several years ago which had several provisions relating to money laundering and the sharing of banking information. Your situation is a logical outgrowth of that treaty which in actuality has taken years to implement on the international level. The off shoots of the agreement have been seen for years in the US through the Bank Secrecy Act. Welcome to the 21st Siglo.
