The Mayor of La Ventana

Something about this place has always spelled relaxation to us. In a different way than El Requeson or Cabo Pulmo or other favorite spots; parental relaxation.

The first time we went to baja with child, she was 3. Needless to say, we were on-the-job full time and needing to stimulate constantly. Something about the "vacation" was definitely missing for us adults. When we finally reached La Ventana, we were greeted by a friend from home as we drove in and before we had fully parked the rig, 2 kids were looking for our daughter to go play. The place is mostly fenced and was full of caring, child-loving adults and families.
This is where the vacation started for us adults. Childcare sharing and group play sessions....YES !!

So this year we pulled into La Ventana, noted a few familiar campers and were greeted by two moms, one dad and 5 kids as we pulled our rig into it's new home. My 4 1/2 year old little man quickly became the "Mayor of La Ventana".
One evening he comes in looking for his harmonica. We had been to La Paz that day and he saw a man playing the sax on the sidewalk for money. He takes his harmonica and leaves to make some cash. At one point, my wife found him standing outside a man's homemade outdoor shower and telling him that he would "play a part of the song for free but if he wanted to hear the whole song he had to pay". He played to a captive audience ! I hear he crashed a few parties after that. About an hour later he came home with a harmonica box full of pesos !

He constantly told us that he was going to see a friend. He made friends with everyone; ages 3 to 73. At least 5 grandmothers tried to adopt him. He played poker with a hot young french canadian girl; I didn't ask the stakes !
He puppy-sat a 4 week old rot puppy.
People I didn't even know kept saying hello to my son.
I KNOW things must have seemed really quiet around there when we left with the Mayor in the back seat !!

Well, if your 4 1/2 year old was the mayor then Alex was certainly somewhere on the board of directors .

The people at that campground are wonderful with kids, aren't they? I had to compete for my son's attention the whole time. One of the mom's would come around and gather the kids for a 'play date'. Alex went off for about 2 hours and came back with some rocks they had hand-painted as a project. He met a bunch of kids I wasn't even aware of. Later on, they all dressed up for halloween and went trick-or-treating from camper to camper.

His social calendar is always way fuller than mine.
