San Jose Organic Farmers Market
Held every Saturday at the Jockey Club from 9-1.
Just back from the organic farmers market where we go peddle books every saturday. what fun. who cares if you sell any books. The weather is
beautiful, I come home with a bag of wonderful vegies that 2 years ago I couldnt have found at all, get to see lotsa people, eat really good prepared
food...today I had chorizo/papa quiche...weird combo but excellente. Listen to drum music and watch kids dance around like they are at a Grateful
Dead concert. Eat homemade ice cream sandwiches from the lady in the booth next to us. You have to buy 6 so she keeps them in her freezer, run by
generator, and we eat them two at a time(one each, of course) Children have lemonade stands but they sell te jamaica. Two people are selling
tamales, one lasagna, another sweets. Hand painted clothes, non painted muslin. Jewelry. Paintings. Wood furniture(Last week we bought a room
divider made from palo de arco)
Yes it was a wonderful day and made more wonderful by sharing it and writing it down. This only happens during growing season
Just had a tomato sandwich with extra mayo, salt and pepper on whole wheat bread. You know this progress stuff is ok, I guess.

Always nice to hear that life is good in San Jose !

they have a little Farmers Market where I live but its not nearly as fun as the one you described...have to check it out sometime

Is there any kind of certification or inspection procedure there to assure the veggies are "organic" ?

Yes there is some sort of ceritification although I am not aware of exactly what it entails. A lot of the vegies go north and are sold as organic
there. For years we locals never saw as much as one lettuce leaf. I remember years ago sitting on a plane watching baskets of cherry tomatoes and
basil being loaded into the cargo hole and wondering why cant I find that stuff here. Well Andronico's(grocery store in SF bay area) would surely
have it on my next trip there.
The thing about land around here is that very little of it has ever been used for agriculture so there are no residual pesticides etc in it. All you
have to do is not start using them.
After cabbage being the only thing close to a salad vegetable for so many years, being able to buy fresh lettuce of every variety, Russian kale,
dinosaur kale, bok choy, chard of every color, salad mixes with little flowers in it, I am just thankful to have it and dont question how it got
there. I would eat it if it werent organic.
It aint cheap. I spend almost $20 every Saturday.

one of the cool things about farmers markets is that you can usually find honey from some of the local bees,which almost always is better than the
store bought stuff
