Choked on the road? Got to hear the details. Had a bad experience with a mouth full of tuff beef. Looked the the grim reaper in the eye. He didn't blink.

Sauerkraut

When I was a boy of about 9, our Sicillian landlord told me a story about how he had fallen asleep one night with a mouth full of sauerkraut. Only to wake up the following morning and finish his meal.

He wasn't joking either. Boy, was I impressed.

Not grossed out yet? Here's more.

Yes he did. Loudly.

He was a short man by American standards and I remember him always wearing a large Fedora hat. His wife was even shorter and always dressed completely in black.

Another memory, in the same vein, had to do with oral hygiene. He believed in brushing his tongue thoroughly every morning and you could hear the sounds coming from the bathroom. Dad found it very amusing. We joked about it but now the medical profession recommends it. Still, from the sounds of it, our Sicillian was trying to clean his entire esophagus.
