Check out Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in far northern California. It's is much nicer than Redwood National Park(Which was clearcut 2 years before it was made into a park!? ) Prairie Creek has a few nice campgrounds (at least one with showers) and very nice forest for hiking. The trees are huge and so are the furns. Often you will see Elk grazing in the meadows. It is located about 50 miles north of Eureka on the coastal highway.

Also, stop at the Big Sur River Inn when in the village/town of Big Sur south of Monterey, CA. Have them make you a drink in a plastic cup and head down to the river behind the inn where you can have a seat on a wooden bench right in the middle of the river while you dip your feet.

Have a great trip.
