Temp Importation Permits-Sonora
For those interested in the necessity of getting a temporary importation permit for any boat 14 feet or longer in the State of Sonora, I have received
a return reply from Heidi Grossman at Marina San Carlos.
Basically, she has stated to me, via email, that there really is no situation that a boat over 14 feet is exempt from a TIP. I asked her specifically
about boats that are trailered down and then returned to the US with their owners (no time spent stored in Mexico) and she stated that they still must
get a TIP. She stated they were available at K21 and could be paid by either $US or $MN. 50.00 US for 10 years.
I have to take this as fact as there are few better experts on this than the owners of Marina San Carlos for the State of Sonora.

Is the break at 14' or over 14' ?
Will I have to chop 3 inches off my Lund or buy the permit ?
I take it this applies to Baja, as well ?

backwards Sonora only permit?
have never gotten a definitive answer on this, and it doesn't involve a boat, but...
is it possible to get a Sonoro only permit in Guaymas at the ferry landing? despite the steep cost of the ferry, I have occasionally thought about
returning to AZ that way rather than the long way around, south of Loreto to Phoenix. Mexican officials assure me that I can 'import' the car, but
seem puzzled when I ask about just getting a Sonora only permit there.
I'd rather not go through the import hoopla, been there, done that, lots when I lived on the mainland. and I never know when I am going to be back,
under six months or ??? importing for a quick drive north to the border seems a waste of time.
so...anyone tried to get the S.O. off loading from Baja to Guaymas? thanks.

Well, they will probably go by what your registration says, rather than tape it out. 50 bucks for ten years is pretty reasonable.
Yeah, supposedly applies to all of Baja, too.

No, but you can now get one just South of Guaymas at Empalme (km98). There is no longer a need to get a Sonora Only pass for travel north of Empalme.
The rules changed about a year ago. No permits required.

Are you talking about the Sonora-only CAR permit? If so, I have generally heard that you really have to go through K21 to have it issued and removed.
Even cars taking different routes from further east or west cant get them without going through K21, or so I have read on the San Carlos boards.
Not surprised they are not set up to do this Santa Rosalia. The paperwork must be done by the State of Sonora; it's really a state exemption of a
federal requirement that probably has to be conducted by the state itself.

Just because the rules have changed in Sonora doesnt mean that they wont require it to board the ferry in S.R. Make sure before you go.
