Since we've got Sat Radio Users Attention...

Has anybody used the new weather services? With the right Chart Plotter /GPS real time weather data can be plotted as a screen overlay, so you can see realtime radar data, get bouy readings, wave height, and wind data, all on your GPS. Has anyone used this service? I assume it works where ever the radios work? Does the magellan unit that incorporates this XM data work with expeditioner maps? Look like a pretty DOPE set up. Now we need Sat Radio email and then ..... Ahhh.

So far, there is one Magellan "chart plotter" (marine and auto modes) that uses XM data, and the RayMarine "e-series" uses Sirius Data.

from XM's website:

Quote:

How It Works

Accurate, real-time, graphical weather information will be overlaid on map display devices in the c-ckpit of aircraft, at the helm of marine vessels and on board emergency response vehicles, providing more detailed, real-time weather information than ever before available. The weather information will include U.S. Government National Weather Service NEXRAD Radar, graphical at-altitude wind speed and direction, sea state and other data. The service has been designed with extensive flexibility, allowing seamless integration into a wide range of display devices.

Its Garmin, not magellan for XM. I played with one at West Marine, and it was really cool. Basically, with an XM radio reciever attached and the marine service as part of your plan, you get all this cool stuff. The GPS unit is INSANE. switch from driving mode to boat mode and if you have a transponder its also a fish finder. K back to the weather stuff. So it overlays radar info, and you can access noaa marine forecasts and ocean data, real time bouy data, pretty much anything you can get from noaas website. I'm curious it if has real baja applications. I guessing it does but didnt stay long enough to try to make bjaa relevant data come up on the screen.
