Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to attach a longer antenna (by coax) to my Uniden hand held VHF?

What's the deal with half wave and 5/8ths. wave etc. I assume I need to know about this "stuff".

I use a 3 ft stainless whip antenna (from West Marine or Overton's) on my handheld. just need to find the right connection from the antenna coax lead to the radio antenna connector (maybe a BNC connector). Usually a trip with the radio and external antenna to the local Radio Shack store works.

If you are surfing, a full wave is best, never tried a half wave........:lol::lol:

Are you thinking about putting an antennae at your home base? If so, just go with an 8 footer. Those almost always work better than a fraction of the wave AND they are higher which means better line of sight coverage.

Hook...I don't know how much I'd use a base station, and was sorta lookin' for a way to get more out of the hand held.
If I could reach San Sebastian, they use 'em like a telephone, and several guys have access to current weather forecasts. I'm actually pretty happy being isolated.

the future is a phone...
use it off a SAT internet site...

Direcway now allows DW7000 on SATMEX5 and with business service for $70 it works at a simular speed to DSL in some locations.

remember i'm not a dealer and would drop direcway like a hot potato if something better comes up:tumble:

If you're talking about using the handheld you take out into the boat as a base station back at your place, then just go with the standard 8 foot antennae on your structure. You will have to get an adaptor for the end of the antennae for your HH radio. If your HH has a BNC connector, it will be very easy.

But, personally, I'd just get a used base station off of ebay or ? People are constantly upgrading, especially since DSC capable radios have become so inexpensive. You should be able to get an older base station w/o DSC capability (but one that still puts out 25 watts) for under 50.00. Look for Standard Horizon or I-COM.

Then, with a base station at home and one out in the boat, you can keep in touch with home while fishing.

Thanks Amigo

I think the HH has a SMA so I'll need to adapt if I do that. Usually if I'm fishin' my co-pilota is right beside me, so there's nobody home to call! I have my own "parking place" at E-Bay, I'll have to do some research.

The invitation is still open for the end of December. Hope you can make it.
