Vizcaino Desert & cacti

At least one travel guide seem to say how "uninteresting" the Vizcaino Desert is. But I'd like to find some areas of this desert that are especially natural; I'd like to see for myself just how interesting this desert is. Apparently, a significant part of the desert has been made into a "Biosphere Reserve" of some sort; so at least some biologists must think this desert is pretty interesting.

I also seem to recall reading that the devil cactus is found in the Vizcaino Desert. I am particularly interested in seeing good examples of the devil cactus in its various stages of growth and development. I'd like to see first-hand how it grows and develops. Seeing a variety of cacti (and other flora and fauna) is of interest to me and so is seeing good examples of the devil cactus.

So what are some good areas to visit in the Vizcaino Desert?

I seem to recall that camping -- and perhaps even simply visiting -- might be prohibited in at least parts of the Biosphere Reserve. Are there good, no-fee places to car-camp for visiting and exploring the Vizcaino Desert?

Try googling vizcaino biophere - you will get a ton of hits with some good info. Descriptions of unique plant and animal species as well as the area it covers.

The area is much richer in life than it appears. The area is largely 2 dimensional. With the exception of buttes here and there the place is flat and seems to extend endlessly. The area around G.R. is very sparse in plant life. There are places where there is only ankle high shrub and plants that seem to crawl along the earth.

Despite all of this we seem to find the greatest variety lizards here. Perhaps it's because they are easier to spot in this type of landscape. We always stop to explore the area. To my way of thinking - it's not barren. We find it beautiful.

Good luck RICHARDH.
