US Passports a must to re-enter USA

Is it a must that all travelers to Baja have to have a passport to re-enter the States or is that all hot air?? What are the new requirments for this year for both children and adults??

Can someone just take a copy of their birth Cert and or some ID and get back...?

The passport initiative that went into effect on January 23, 2007 only applies to air travel to Mexico. A passport will not be needed to cross back by car, foot or boat until January of 2008, although some reports have said that this second phase may be pushed back until June of 2009.

For those who still do not believe you don't need a Passport to get back into the States by car or on foot. We have crossed 3 times this month and while we have Passports, U.S. did not ask and we did not give! No problema until 2008 and then, none at all, if you still have your Passport!
