BAJA PREZ DAY WEEKEND 2007 (Part 1of 4, Border to Pedregoso)
BAJA PREZ DAY WEEKEND 2007
We crossed the border at 4 pm, Friday afternoon…
Tijuana Border to Playas Toll Gate Friday afternoon was very slow with mucho traffic and the military waving cars past their Humvees near the Playas
de Tijuana exit was part of the reason for congestion... Recommend using Otay border, then head towards Tecate a couple miles and turn south on the
new Blvd. 2000 expressway to Fox Studios south of Rosarito... Maybe a few miles longer, but it has to be faster in time!
Dinner at Half Way House prepared by Chef Johnny was awesome (again)! There was the specials list as you enter the dining room from the cantina area
and an extensive menu. However, when Chef Johnny comes to your table to make meet you and describe the specials, you can tell him what you have an
appetite foe and he will create the meal!
I asked for beef and shrimp, and Johnny prepared a delicious filet mignon with sauce and a generous portion of garlic shrimp. Included was Cesar salad
and dessert… $22. We watched the sun set during dinner… WOW!
5 hours total driving time from border to El Rosario where we had a fantastic room at the Baja Cactus Motel, $35... Antonio (the owner) was there and
came to our room for a visit… It was at our Viva Baja Cactus party last November when we last saw Antonio and we were surprised by the beard he has
grown (maybe just for fun)!
Gas was 6.50 pesos:litre @ 10.70 pesos per dollar at El Rosario's Baja Cactus Pemex station ($2.31: gallon)... I paid in dollars and got exact correct
change, naturally.
For breakfast Saturday, we went to Baja’s Best Bed & Breakfast at the far end of town (2.2 miles from Baja cactus) for another good breakfast, as
before. Baja Angel had pan cakes (hot cakes) and eggs, and I had the chorizo breakfast burritos (3) that came with hash browns and beans.
We took it easy driving south through the boojum hills and saw up ahead, a caravan of motor homes!!! Over a dozen… yikes (I thought)… When we got
close enough to begin passing them, they left space enough for us to hop scotch through and we saw that they all had numbers on the back and ‘Baja and
Back’ stickers! ‘Baja and Back’ are Baja Nomads who attended the Viva Baja Cactus dinner last November. Sure enough, we got behind the lead motor home
(#1), and there was a ‘got baja?’ sticker on it!
When we passed through Cataviña, I noticed there are now TWO vendors selling gas, on the left side of the road. No need for us, as the Toyota had only
used about 4 gallons from El Rosario…
Our first goal was to have a look at the possible ‘short cut’ to Gonzaga Bay from Highway One known as ‘Kacey Smith’s XR Ride’ or ‘Coco’s Shortcut’…
that goes from near the boulder mountain of Pedregoso to La Turquesa Canyon and on to Highway 5 between Gonzaga and Coco’s Corner.

Well, if you're gonna skp Tacos Yaqui, that's the way to go. Audrey and I have had some great meals at the Half Way House, but haven't been there in
quite a while.

I will try to follow your advise the problem
is that my wife works when I have the days off, and I have to take care of my three children..fell kind of bad if I leave with out her,lol
