Mom-kid camping?

Hi Nomads,
These forums are amazing, so I thought I'd ask you all for advice. I want to take my 9 year-old son down to Baja for the first week of April. Is it safe to go alone as a mom and a kid? I speak Spanish and have driven to Mulege by myself without thinking twice about it, but that was in pre-bambino days. With the little guy, I'm worried...

We know our way around Mulege/Loreto, but I don't think we have time to make it that far down this time around. We're both pretty experienced tent campers. Any suggestions for where to pitch our tents? Northish--either on the Pacific or the Sea of Cortez. Ideally, somewhere quiet but safe, with snorkeling and clamming.

Is San Felipe crazy the first week of April?

Thanks so much!

Yep, better to camp with kids...only problem is this week is the week for everyone to get drunk so there will be lots of borachos and loud music everywhere so take extra care. I camped for many years sola with my daughter and never had a problem.

No, not quiet. Yes, safe. Yes, San Felipe will be the craziest of the entire year the first week of April. It is vacation time. If you can wait till the second week, it would be a lot better, that's what we do.

Mommy

Every inch of easily accessable coastline will be lined with thousands of Semana Santa vacationers the first 10 days of April. I really would try to do it after the 8th or 9th.
Camping near other campers would be wise or take a sizeable dog. Don't worry just use common sense and choose your place more carefully than you would with multiple travelers.. Kids are a full time job as it is!
Of course, driving at night is not advised. Get more info here by doing a search of the towns and their respective camping areas and hotels. Ask the Nomads specific questions.

If you must go that week, maybe think about somewhere out of the way from the major parties like Bahia Asuncion ? You could do the whales at the lagoon on the way past. Also, If you like the desert, Catavinia has some nice hikes and the folks at Ranco St Inez keep things safe. BLA will be more quiet than San Felipe but careful camping where coyotes roam to the north of town. Maybe try Archelon just north of town.

Alone with kid time in Baja can be really different than back home. Lot's of one on one. You will love it.

Thanks so much for all the great advice! That's the week I have off, so Semana Santa is what we're stuck with. Here's a new pile of questions!

How far south is Bahia Asuncion--how many hours from the border?

What's BLA?

How many hours to Archelon?

Thanks again! :dudette:

BLA is Bahia de Los Angeles, Archelon is a camp in that town. 9-10 hours drive time, but that doesn't really allow for any sightseeing along the way.

Hey, bajamommy, you might try Coyote Cal's in Erendira. Fits your bill of being not too far down (about 70 miles below Ensenada) and I can vouch that it's real safe. I took my kids there when they were smaller and go there when I don't have time to get down to the warmer water. Gringo run place with lots of quiet local beaches to camp on if you want to get a little more isolated.

HOla Mommy, I imagine Bay Of LA will be very crowded that week, especially campo archelon...also be VERY careful with your child as there are LOTS of stinging mantas. We don't go there anymore as we like to swim on sandy beaches and it's just too dangerous on the sandy parts and there are also painful sea urchins on the rocky beaches. The problem with the pacific side that week is that it is often very windy and not real pleasant (calm weather in that week is rare but can happen) for camping. We might be in Agua Verde for a few days the first week of April but my daughter might be here and you can camp here if you like. Everyone from Asuncion goes somewhere else or to San Roque so it's very quiet here. Hope we see you...have a great trip

jeeez thank's...lol as for where to go my mom is not going to be in asuncion but my boyfriend and a couple of other friends of mine will be there taking care of the place so you are welcome to head on down and visit!!! another place to go that is relativly quite and safe is the lagoon, the guys there are very nice and tell them sirena sent you and they will look out for you no problem, also if you do go there i'm sure the kid would have a blast and would be lulled to sleep by the whales breathing as you can hear them from your tent, so let me know where you wanna go if it's one of those places i can help!!! also if you decide to go somewhere else bay of LA is pretty but i'm not sure how it is in semana santa...
