taking new (used) car into Baja?

hi
does anyone know if taking a new car (in this case a newly purchased used car) into Baja California with only temporary tags (the paper lisence stuck to the window) is legal or do I have to wait for the the real metal plates?

thank you!

Temp registration is fine. If there is no lien holder on the vehicle, the registration/title is all you will need.

If there is a lien, one should get a "Permission to Travel to Mexico" notarized letter from the lien holder. Most lenders issue these letters provided you have proper Mexican auto insurance, which you will want to have anyway. That letter will preclude complications which could arise with Mexican authorities in the event of any accident.

Go for it.

I took my new Tacoma to Baja (in February 1996) when it was less than one month old and still had its paper plates.
I just couldn't wait to get the Baja pinstriping installed....
