Report of Tourist Attacked in December

http://www.eham.net/articles/7708

Mike Newbold, K0YO, the most active 6m operator in DN60, was vacationing in Baja Mexico just before Christmas 2003 and was savagely beaten and robbed at about 3am. He was thrown in a ditch and left for dead as the robbers thought they had killed him. The thugs at the same time beat and killed two Canadian surfers that were camping about 100 yards away from Mike and threw their bodies and those of their dogs over a cliff. The robbers stole the two vehicles plus all the possessions of their victims. Mike crawled 3 km on his hands and knees thru cactus and over rocks to a road where he had a better chance of being found. Some surfers from LA found him the next day and took him to medical attention and contacted the police who interviewed Mike in the medical facility. They then took Mike back to LA with them for further medical treatment. Crossing the border without any ID was difficult. Mike then took a Greyhound bus back to Steamboat Springs, CO, where his son met him and took him for further medical treatment then home for a Christmas eve dinner.

Mike was beaten on the head at least 12 times with a pipe and on other parts of his body as well. He had some skull fractures. He was also stabbed in the back which turned out to be a minor injury compared to the others.
