White Fungus on Palm Posts

Two of the red palm posts of my palapa have developed a fungus sort of growth. It is white, dry and spongy like styrofoam. It pushes up the varnish like blisters. I scraped it off and applied bleach solution. This seems to prevent it from growing back in the same place but it pops up around the treated area. Anyone know what it is and what I can do to curb it other than scrape and bleach all of my poles?
Gracias for any advice.

We used to get that stuff on our palm posts at our place on the hill. I figured it was caused from some sort of sap in the palm. We'd have to sand it off every time we touched up the posts too.

Didn't really pay attention to it at the time, but now that I think about it, seems the white stuff stopped forming after we started using varathane instead of varnish.

We had a white fungus rather like you describe on our bouganvillia. The hortoculturist prescribed some kind of copper solution ... ours looked a bit like a conk that grows on trees in the Oregon forest. Hope you don't have to scrape and bleach everything.
