CFE Accepting Bids to Build Solar Power Plant in Mexicali

Mexico City, Feb 05, 2003 (EFE via COMTEX) -- The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Mexico's state-owned power distribution monopoly, has begun accepting bids from companies to build a 198-242 megawatt combined-cycle plant and solar-power facility in Mexicali, Baja California.

CFE officials told EFE Tuesday that the power agency would continue to accept bids until the end of March.

Under Mexico's electricity laws, private-sector power producers are only allowed to sell their output to the CFE.

The company that submits the winning bid will get a 25-year franchise to manage the plant and a $49.35 million subsidy from the Global Environment Facility, a unit of the World Bank, to develop a 25-megawatt solar plant.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September and the plant should begin operations in March 2006.
