Another Arellano May Have Been Killed in a Shootout

Mexico City, Feb 20, 2003 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Mexico's top prosecutor said Thursday that one of the people killed in a gun battle at a hamburger restaurant this month could be the younger of the two Arellano Felix brothers, who allegedly control the Tijuana drug cartel.

Although the Attorney General's Office (PGR) has not yet made an official announcement, prosecutor Bernardo Batiz of the Federal District, where the shootout occurred on Feb. 6, said there was evidence that one of the victims may be Francisco Javier Arellano Felix.

Batiz said the PGR was conducting fingerprint tests and DNA analysis and examining hair samples to corroborate this hypothesis.

Mexico City, Mar 04, 2003 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Federal authorities said Tuesday that the younger brother of a jailed drug kingpin was not among those killed last week in a double shooting at a fast-food restaurant in the Mexican capital.

The attorney general's office, known by the Spanish initials PGR, said in a statement that DNA tests on the victims showed that the body was not that of Javier Arellano Felix, known as "el Tigrillo."

The Arellano Felix family reputedly controls the powerful Tijuana drug cartel.

Mexico City district attorney Bernardo Batiz initially told the press that one of the two victims of the Feb. 6 shooting could be the kingpin's brother. The victim was initially identified as Javier Pereyra.

Batiz said the PGR had ordered DNA tests on the victim and Bejamin Arellano Felix, who has been in prison since March 9, 2002, accused of a number of drug-related crimes, to determine the victim's identity.

At the time the PGR denied it had ordered the test.

On Tuesday, however, it admitted to ordering the test and said they determined that the victim was not a member of the Arellano Felix family.
