Mission Doloras and Fig Trees

Waiting to be able to leave so sharing Baja stories. Several years ago, my son spent a few weeks camping in the Los Burros area and of course, hiked to the Mission ruins.

They then followed the water source and at the top, found some very old fig trees with dates from the 1800s carved in them.

Just wondered if anyone here had seen those?

Also, he met a family of knife makers in that area---made great fishing knives out of old car parts and he wondered if any one knows about them and if they are still in the area?

We know the history of the mission already without you.

----just two questions asked here out of curiosity

Has anyone else seen the fig trees and does anyone know the knife making family?

Looking for someone who has actually been there

on edit---there was a post to which this responded---post all gone.

And I replied FIRST with a question to you... which you ignored: "Any photos from your son's trip?"

I sure was hoping your unwarranted hostility towards me would end in 2010...

Unwarranted it is not. Now, please go back to posting your puking faces along with the name of our President---It fits you well.

Again, has anyone been there?

WOW. I thought Diane had a legitimate question... one that would be of interest.

Your boy is one adventerous guy, and good for him.. I too.. hope he has taken pictures, but of his trip down from MT.. man, what a trip... reminds me of "our family vacations" when growing up... spent three days in Wickenburg AZ, after the old man hit a pice of angle iron that bounced up and punctured the gas tank.. and then we had a flat and he had used up all of those old "patch" kits you used to put a match to to patch the tube.. we went in on the rim.. can still heard my Mother telling him she would never go on a vacation with him again... but the next year we were broken down out past the junction of 395 and the road from Mojave, in the middle of the desert.. we were heading to South Lake to fish and camp.. we camped for a day in the desert, in an old heavy cavus tent.. again, my Mom said no way.. so, he had to get a tow, back to the only gas station on 395 and put my mom into a "motel" room.. my sister saw the exahust pipe for the gas compressor at the station and put her hand onto it to muffle the sound.. then we were trying to keep her from screeming from all the pain she suffered from the burn to the palm of her hand (still has the scar) .. could go on.. but, let's just say my Mom finally quite going "camping with my Dad".. he did not let anything like a break down slow him down at all... and he was at this time going to Baja, was in the late 40's and 50's.. but only took me and my brother down with him.. we didn't care if we couldn't take a shower.. plus all the fireworks.. we were in heaven.. would leave us in Ensenada for the day, we stayed in the car... were the boats went out.. and just messed around in Ensenada.. it was just a super time.. so wish I had taken my "brownie hawkeye".. but, wouldn't have taken pictures most likely ... was really bad about taking pictures.. trying to get better.. yours are always really neat.. still like that one over at the Salton Sea.. you caught a one in a million in my book.. a super shot.. should see if it sells as it is "art" in my book..

Your son's drive down from MT. has brought back a lot of really funny memories for me... thanks and I just think it's great that he will be down here with you... that is just super... our son is coming down today, and I'm looking forward to the short visit.. he could stay full time.. and I wish I could get him to do it...

And to find old artifacts like that must be really fun.. never had the luck... couple of deposit pop bottles was about it for me.... it's all good... and I know he will make, sounds like he is made from good stock!! :):):):)

Diana,
The knives are made at Rcho Las Animas and Rcho Las Parras. I have several but have not visited the ranches yet. They are made from old auto springs and are quite lovely, also handmade sheaths. Kathy and I are planning a camping trip in that area in March and I will post pics then. We plan to explore between San Luis Gonzaga out to Punta Evaristo.

I will be motorcycling south again in Feb (and meeting the group for Mission Santa Maria) so may see you and John in Asuncion.

Hi Kurt,
I hope we are there when you are in town. Look forward to hearing about your camping trip.

Good to know that those places also make knives. He will have to check them out. The family he remembers was near Primera Agua not far from San Evaristo---just a house in a small village. But he also made the blades from car springs and the handles from black PVC. He has a couple and they are nice.

He has told us about lots and lots of interesting places back in that area and lots of artifacts that were basically undisturbed.

But he also mentioned a ranch where they make Orange wine and he said that was really nasty.

Aren't you assuming something?

No, it's begining to look like 2010 is going to be much like 2009, 2008, 2007 (check the threads). Well, at least things are "stable".
