Hooks for Roosterfish

I would like some advice on the best hook and size for flylining for Roosters. We'll be going down to Verdugos in a few weeks and I'd like some advice from someone with real experience!
Thanks in advance.

hooks

When you say flylining I assume you are talking about using live bait thrown to spotted fish. Hook size will depend on the type and size of the bait. Bait can be as small as sardines or as big as mackeral and small jacks. The hotel boats like to slow troll baits far behind the boat and just off the beach for roosters. If you are talking about actual fly fishing I know nothing about that, but bajafly who posts a weekly report here would be the one to contact for that. I have tried the circle hooks and they actually work well when fished properly. My problem is breaking the entrenched habbit of wanting to set the hook when the fish strikes that is a no no with the circle hooks. If you go down with an assortment of live bait hooks then you will be ready for any size bait. Good luck and post a report for us when you return. fishin rich

a buddy of mine here in Stockton, just got back from an East Cape fly-in trip and snagged a 52 pound Rooster! It was darker in color that most Roosters you see, and he hooked it in deep water. The boat driver said it's rare to snag one out where they were fishing!

He couldn't help bringing it home, and he's got a local guy mounting it! He fishes all the time, but thought this one was 'special'!

Rooster hooks...

Owner makes a great hook, Aki Hook salt water special 5170-161. Perfect for fishing big live baits. circle hooks a good too but as already mentioned one has to get used to the hookset.
A 52 pound rooster is indeed awesome...but not worth killing under any circumstances. Take photos and measurements...A replica mount is every bit as cool if not more than skin mount. Catch and release those roosters...no matter how much the panguero wants to bonk him!
