Baja Love Ride takes off Tuesday

Baja Love Ride takes off Tuesday
From Rosarito to San Felipe, charity event aims to encourage tourism

By Sandra Dibble

Friday, March 18, 2011 at 9:24 p.m.

Organizers of the Baja Love Ride say they are expecting some 400 people to participate in the four-day, 217-mile charity event. The ride is scheduled to start Tuesday in Rosarito Beach, passing through Ensenada, Ojos Negros and Valle de la Trinidad, finishing Friday in San Felipe.

The event has a dual purpose: To raise funds for children’s charities in Baja California, and to bring more U.S. visitors to the state. The ride has the support of Baja California tourism officials, as well as Red Cross chapters, the Mexican federal police, and the roadside assistance crews known as the Green Angels.

The ride is being spearheaded by Americans who live in Baja California or do business there. “Riding through the beautiful parts of Baja is a great way to get people excited about it,” said Hank Morton, who sells car insurance to travelers to the state. “It’s all about finding the channels to get people to come back to Baja, and to help with this charity.”

Riders can opt for the entire ride, join for one or two days, or choose to join a short four-to-seven mile stretch as riders start for the day. Prices range from $25 to $200. Registration ends Monday.
