January Whale Trip report Ojo de Liebre

Hola amigos...I'm finally back home after attending my dear father's wake in Ontario. On the way back to Canada, we decided to take a little detour to the lagoon to see some baby whales.

It was only January 10th and I was amazed to see soooo many whales already in the lagoon...we must have seen at least a couple hundred just in the inner nursery area.

As expected, we saw lots of newborn calves about a week old and one was only a few hours old and still had it's wrinkles and folds from being curled up in the womb.

Here is a new mom coralling her calf...wrapping her tail around it to protect it.

Here is an old friend of mine called "Tomahawk" for the marking on her nose...she LOVES spy hopping and does it regularly...her new baby is next to her. Most new moms dont do this as it puts them in a vulnerable position, but she is such a show off and very trusting.

It was a crystal clear, calm day and most of the whales were resting peacefully.

Here is a baby riding on mammas back

ONe pregnant mamma impressed us all by coming over to us and hanging under the boat...it was my familie's first trip so they were pretty amazed at her size.

It was an awe inspiring trip. Many people choose to go see whales during the peak season in February/March but seeing newborn babies is truly wonderful.

When we returned, we had yummy fresh shrimp tacos at the Interpretive Center restaurant, on the patio watching whales.

There are more palapas for camping now too.

It was so great to be back in the lagoon. There are lots of whales hanging around our place these days too in Asuncion.

If any of you want to join me in a guided whale trip, here are some of the dates we will be there. My birthday whale extravaganza will be March 2-3...stay at Cowboy Motel on the 2nd and whale watch on the 3rd.

We are planning a Nomad trip on Feb.16th and another on March 9-10th if anyone wants to come along...more dates will be added in a few days too.

Shari,
The guided whale trip on March 2-3 sounds great. Can you provide some more details on how we can join the group?
Thanks

Hi Shari, There's a good chance I'll be in GN on the 2nd with my family. If we are in town it would be good to get together. Hi to Juan and sorry to for your loss. We will be heading North after a visit to the next lagoon South, San Ignacio. Baja Sur, the last few months has been a combination of sunny, windy and cloudy days- Winter.:)

Great pics Shari, thanks.... My sincere condolence regarding your father. That's always a tough one when a parent passes. I just lost mine also after 91 years.
Hope to come down sometime this year and meet you guys. Looking forward to being able to take some pictures like these in person..... ..
