I want to post an avatar but don't know how to do the URL thing. I cannot even figure out how to upload to Photobucket. How about make it easier on the site here to post.....

This site runs on open-source software - and is (essentially) limited to features included by the developers.

Avatars here are not uploaded. They need to be hosted elsewhere (Photobucket is an option). One simply needs to reference the specific location of the image itself elsewhere (not the page it's on). This is often referred to as the "URL". The image also needs to be a max size of 130w x 150h.

You can put the avatar URL in your profile at any time. It will begin to display with your postings once you reach 25 posts.
