Dave Deal has been the Baja vehicle and off road racing's best comic illustrator for many, many years... some places where you may have seen Dave
Deal's work:
Dick Cepek's catalog featured Dave's Blazer cartoon on its cover; The Baja Bush Pilot's logo and the cover of some of Arnold Senterfitt's Airports of
Baja California editions; and CAR Toon magazine. We might know Dave's work best from his illustrations for Jimmy Smith's book, 'The Grinning
Gargoyle...'
Dave autographed my copy of 'Moto Color Off Road Coloring Book'. Here is part of that page, edited to fit the size resriction of 50 Kbs.

What I assumed is that you hold your Baja books as close as I do mine, therefore, I was offering an option for others that may want to add to their
collections, Norm has offered his, the other person has asked me to not mention his name 'on line' I'll offer again, he (non-mentioned) has some
really great books (I have bought a few)....if interested I would think that a U2U would get his attention if you want. Enough said.....

Debra, it's right here on Today's Posts board... I collect Baja books, so I have a few duplicates... But, my comment in the other book thread was
about where my books could go following my death... I want them to be easily available to Baja explorers for reference.

Books in Spanish
There's no shortage of worthwhile books about Baja California in Spanish, but unlike the English-language books mentioned earlier on this thread, few
of them are focused on travel adventures.
The best known travel book is El Otro Mexico by journalist Fernando Jordan. Married to Swedish anthropologist Barbro Dahlgren [who co-authored reports
on Baja's rock art], Jordan was less naive about the land than most visitors of the 1950s.
Maximino Martinez, whose classic book on Mexico's plants has been expanded by other botanists in recent years, wrote a book about a trip in BCS made
in 1945.
Ulises Irigoyen made an investigative tour down the peninsula in the 1940s at the request of Mexico's President--an interesting survey but not a fun
read.
Serious early-day stuff:
The Jesuits compiled several detailed accounts 1697-1768. Miguel Venegas contacted peninsular missionaries and prepared a lengthy manuscript that was
stringently edited by Andres Burriel and many others. English translation of the 3 volumes is said to be poorly done.
Francisco Clavijero consulted with peninsula Jesuits after being exiled to Italy. (I haven't seen the English translation.)
Miguel del Barco's book was based on his 30 years in Baja California. In the 2nd edition, editor Miguel Leon-Portilla provided a wealth of ancillary
material.
Serious publications of early 1900s:
Leon Diguet, French chemist who worked as assayer for Boleo mines at Santa Rosalia, published reports on archaeological sites as well as the area's
economic activities.
Paul Rivet's study of archaeological investigations, based on collections sent to Paris and the U.S. National Museum, was translated from French to
Spanish in the 1940s.
Pablo L. Martinez's Guia familiar [1700-1900] provides info on birth, marriage and death not available elsewhere.
Pablo Martinez del Rio [not to be confused with Pablo L.] wrote a book on the arrival of humans in America; the 2nd edition summarizes theories of
possible relationships of Pericu, Melanesians, and early Brazilians.
Serious recent material:
Ignacio del Rio Chavez has published a detailed study of Indian acculturation as well as many shorter papers.
Archaeologists Fermin Reygadas Dahl and Guillermo Velazquez Ramirez wrote El Grupo Pericu de Baja California, published in 1981.
Many scholarly studies have appeared in the Pacific Coast Archaeological Quarterly, which used to feature Baja California annually in its January
issue.

Keri and I are working very hard to include more Mexican Authors in our next Baja Authors Book Signing in April of 2005. I have personnally invited
Daniel Reveles who said he would attend and a couple of others that said perhaps! Bottom line seems to be that if you are a good Baja Author and a
Mexican you are so much in demand that you don't have time for the 'silly gringos' who live in Baja.
Those were not my quotes and, No, I will not go any further.
If any of you know any Mexican authors who would like to attend this event please let Keri or I know.
