Revenge for recent stories seen as possible motive

TIJUANA ? The owner of an English-language publication in Baja California filed a report with Mexican authorities last week about the theft of 8,000
papers and a threatening e-mail.
Nancy Conroy, owner and editor of the Gringo Gazette, said the paper may have been targeted because of stories and editorials written about a property
dispute that could affect people who signed up for beachfront condominiums.
"It's a very complicated lawsuit, and there are a lot of powerful interests involved," said Conroy.
The free, twice-monthly newspaper, distributed at local businesses, has a circulation of about 15,000 and is aimed at the American expatriate
community in Baja California.
Conroy said she started the publication three years ago after working as a lawyer and real estate broker in the United States. She writes articles as
well as editorials. The paper publishes information on local golf, fishing, hotels and tourist activities but also covers community news.
In recent issues, the Gringo Gazette has been writing about a federal lawsuit in which a man named Ernesto Corona is suing Hugo Torres, the owner of
the Rosarito Beach Hotel, and his business partners over a property in Rosarito Beach. According to the Gringo Gazette, Torres has pre-sold
condominiums to both Mexican and American buyers, possibly without notifying them of the pending lawsuit.
Because battles over land rights are controversial, Conroy suspects it could have prompted the actions against the newspaper. Over the past month,
someone removed the papers from distribution sites in the cities of Rosarito Beach and Ensenada, according to reports Conroy filed with Baja
California investigators.
Conroy, a 1997 graduate of USC law school, also shared a copy of an e-mail directed at her and dated Nov. 6. The message is written in Spanish and
uses expletives. It also says "if you don't want Mexico to kick you out of here, it would be better for you to leave the country."

In reality,
None of the Mexicans like her or her fishwrap. But, it would be my guess that the papers were taken to start fires with in this cold weather.
Corona and Torres couldn't care less about what some bullchit gringo paper has to say about them and wouldn't waste their time on somebody like
Nancy Conroy or stealing her nonsense.
As far as the email, most everyone feels that way! That's why their office in Rosarito lasted about a week or two.
Maybe one day, she will catch on before it's too late !
