CA smog check for out of state/country vehicles - new procedure

New procedures effective 4/2014: There is a new form-5103 that allows you to renew your vehicle without a smog check even it you're scheduled for one. I've done it in the past for several years for my La Paz car using form 256, but it was always a hassle. Now you just fill out the form and take it in to DMV or AAA with your renewal and BAM! you're done. No questions asked, no hassle, no fuss.

I know there are a lot of you here who register in S. Dakota, but for those of us who, for whatever reason, want to keep the CA registration but are due for smog check, it's a piece of cake now.

PS - I forgot to add that there are still cities in Nevada, and Tijuana, and Tecate, that are not covered by this procedure.

Great news (maybe). I finally gave up jumping through all the hoops in Ca and went to SD. Registration fees were 1/3 of what CA wanted. Will CA accept Mx insurance? Before I was required to also show proof of a Ca insurance policy

Bob - Just so there's no confusion here, this is for license renewals (not first time registrations) where a smog check is required. If the car is out of state/country the new form 5103 is used to get the smog exemption. It has nothing to do with insurance certification. I just renewed at AAA using the form, stated on the form that the car was in BCS and was not asked for anything else.
