BOOKS for Gifts (or you)! Classic Baja Books Now Added.

Happy Holidays Baja Amigos, Nomads, and Lurkers!

Max and I at M & E BOOKS (publisher of The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California, 1697-1834) are happy to announce two newly acquired CLASSIC Baja books that any Baja fan would love to have. A very limited supply of the 1953 'Baja California' by Ralph Hanc-ck and the 1974 edition of Mike McMahan's 'There It Is: Baja!' (one of my all time favorite Baja reads).

The web page with PayPal links has been updated, have a look: http://oldmissions.com/

There It Is: Baja! by Mike McMahan is a wonderful look at all the exciting places, history and adventures to be found on the fascinating peninsula,by a man famous for his Baja wall maps over the past 40+ years. Hardback, photo-filled, 240 pages.
1974 edition. $27.25 (includes tax and domestic shipping)

'Baja California' by Ralph Hanc-ck (with Ray Haller, Mike McMahan, Frank Alvarado) is a sportsman's adventure book about their 1952 expedition down the exotic Baja Peninsula, long before it was well known and over twenty years before a paved road could be traveled down to the tip. Hardback, photo-filled, 166 pages. 1953 edition. $27.25 (includes tax and domestic shipping)

This is the book that was written about the trip of 1952 seen in this You Tube clip:

========================================================

The wonderful story of Mike and Mary Ann Humfreville as they spent two summers,
separated by several years, on the L.A. Bay area coast of Baja in Mike's classic written
adventure: 'In the Shadow of the Volcano' c2006

Email us if you would like a copy: oldmissions@gmail.com

The first book that shows the entire 48 California Mission founding history,
which began and ended in Baja California... Not in San Diego, and not north a day's ride apart!
San Diego was the 19th California mission and the next one founded was nearly 500 miles away at Monterey!
'The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California, 1697-1834' c2012,
now 2nd edition, 2015 printing. To order: http://oldmissions.com

Hey David, My friends from Idaho recently sent me a first edition of the Sea of Cortez by Ray Cannon. It'll be in my library in Bahia Asuncion for any Nomads to look at it if they visit our little pueblo when I'm down there.

Two dirt roads diverged in Baja and I, I took the one less graveled by......

Hi Tom, I am working on it every day I am here at home and not doing any irrigation jobs. John is making many editing suggestions and it will have a real professional look. The data is just so extensive about the missions it is difficult for me to just cut it off to fit! While it would be nice to have it published for the holiday shoppers, I don't think I want to rush it. So, no release date yet. I am also entertaining to send it to some publishers for consideration. I make a lot less per book than if we publish it here, but someone else does the marketing and distribution so it can get into more bookstores. Doing the PowerPoint shows with Max is fun, but all the hours and driving to sell a dozen books with a profit of $5 each really doesn't seem logical.

One thing for sure, this new Baja California Mission Guide will have more details, stories, facts and figures than any other one book has ever had. Some of the Choral Pepper stories that were going to be published in the last book she wrote (and gave me the rights to) are included for some Baja lore and fun.

What I have had to redo more than once, are the maps. I was going to have topo maps to show the mission's region and up-close location. That just didn't add to the value, as much as I like maps. I am going just with a peninsula or part of the peninsula maps with mission locations pointed out.

There will be many photos, and lists that may be of value to students and researchers... and a huge Baja mission book reference list should anyone want to dig deeper into the details!

In addition to the books for sale at http://oldmissions.com I would like anyone seeking a large collection of (many rare) Baja books to contact me if interested in such a collection. In my 50 years of acquiring Baja books, I have several duplicate editions. With the economy still so terrible for us in the home improvement/ landscape irrigation industry, I must consider selling some of my treasured books.
Thank you

why not put out a list of books and prices? Growth in the SOCAL home improvement sector is at 6.5%.
